What are the responsibilities and job description for the Animal Control Officer position at County of Newaygo?
Under the supervision of the Chief Animal Control Officer, enforces the state laws dealing with animal control and issues citations for violations. Working in conjunction with law enforcement and emergency personnel, responds to citizen complaints regarding animals and patrols the county to pick up stray animals and responds to other animal-related concerns. Works closely with the Chief Animal Control Officer to efficiently execute all functions of the Animal Control Department. In the absence of the Chief Animal Control Officer, serves as designee in all matters related to animal control and the animal shelter.

- Responds to and investigates complaints related to stray animals, animal bites, dead or injured animals, livestock killings, vicious dogs, and other animal-related complaints and takes action to resolve the matter. Works with animal owners and neighbors in order to help resolve animal-related problems and concerns.
- Investigates suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect, which includes reviewing the condition of the animals, interviewing the animal owner and witnesses, and determining whether to issue a citation. Completes case reports for the Prosecutor’s office and testifies in court.
- Documents results of investigations by completing reports on animal bites, livestock killings and related activities. Documents information on animals that have been picked up.
- Collects and processes evidence including taking photographs, videos, written statements and other physical evidence required for prosecution of criminal cases..
- Responsible to accurately document criminal cases under investigation by utilizing an electronic record management system. Must create and submit detailed reports and draft search warrants when necessary.
- Assists in maintaining the kennel, including cleaning, disinfecting and making minor repairs.
- Performs all other duties and assignments as requested that are job related or necessary to execute animal control services. Performs other tasks requiring independent judgment and decision-making based on a well-developed knowledge of state and federal laws pertaining to animal welfare.
Education: High school graduation or equivalent.
Experience: One to two years experience providing working knowledge of animal assessment, care, handling, investigation standards, and sanitation and disease control.
Other Requirements:
- Must obtain certification as an Animal Control Officer by the Michigan Department of Agriculture within 6 monhs of employment.
- Must obtain euthanasia certification within 6 months of employment.
- Must submit cover letter, resume, and three (3) professional references.
- Must possess a valid Michigan Drivers License.
Salary : $18 - $22
