Role Overview
Assists the Building Official by directing and assigning work to the staff to ensure that thorough and timely inspections and plan reviews are conducted and that proper discretion is used in the enforcement of construction codes; Maintains “active” working relationship with owners/developers during all phases of development; Assists citizens with questions or problems that may occur during construction; Performs preliminary plan reviews for life safety systems and hazardous occupancies; Performs inspections during all phases of building construction; Assumes all responsibilities of Building Official in their absence.
Role Description
- Performs commercial and residential plan reviews; discusses code requirements with architects, engineers and building owners for plan approvals.
- Handles code inspections of commercial buildings and carnival amusement rides; performs inspection of residential projects.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical code enforcement; comprehensive knowledge of building, construction, engineering and structural engineering principles and practices; ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates; ability to present facts and recommendations effectively in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, Town, state and federal officials, contractors, builders and the general public.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or GED with certifications as indicated below in the Special Requirements section and a minimum of three (3) years of inspection or construction work and one (1) year of supervisory experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
- Certifications required by the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code as a Combination Building Inspector/Plan Examiner or Certified as a Building Official through the International Code Council (ICC).
- Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
