Role Overview
Performs skilled work operating a refuse collection vehicle over an assigned route, transporting leachate and refuse to disposal sites and related work as required. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Landfill Manager.
Role Description
- Operates roll-off trucks to haul leachate to prescribed disposal areas.
- Serves as a back-up driver to operate front end and roll-off trucks to collect and transports refuse from collection sites throughout the County to prescribed disposal areas.
- Cleans truck and equipment, performs preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Performs other public works and maintenance duties as assigned.
- Performs related tasks as required.
- Assists in landfill ground maintenance tasks such as mowing grass and bushhogging.
- Serves as a back-up scale house operator.
- Operates heavy equipment as needed and directed by the Landfill Manager.
- Schedule not to exceed 29 hours per week.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of the operation and servicing of heavy trucks and equipment; thorough knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation; thorough knowledge of safe driving practices and occupational hazards of the work; skill in the operation of heavy automotive equipment; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to detect signs of the mechanical failure of the automotive and packing equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with citizens and County staff.
Education and Experience
High school diploma or equivalent and 1-3 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the occasional exertion of up to 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently sitting and occasionally requires, walking, climbing or balancing, reaching with hands and arms and lifting; work requires close vision, distance vision, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; worker is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions and frequently working near moving mechanical parts; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. heavy traffic, large earth-moving equipment).
Special Requirements
- Possession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Must have a tanker endorsement or obtain within 45 days of hire.
