SALARY INFORMATION 
   Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.

This recruitment is only open to Deputy Probation Officer II incumbents or employees who have worked in comparable classifications in a California county.

This recruitment will establish an Open eligible list. This list will be used to fill current and future Deputy Probation Officer II positions. This recruitment may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications.
 

PROBATION

The Orange County Probation Department assists the criminal justice system in Orange County, California by making a safer Orange County through positive change. Under the direction of the Chief Probation Officer, a dynamic executive team with an organizational structure comprised of three bureaus – Adult Operations, Juvenile Operations, and Administrative Services – serves the community using efficient and research supported corrections practices to reduce crime, assist the Courts in managing offenders, promoting lawful and productive lifestyles and assisting victims.


THE OPPORTUNITY
The Deputy Probation Officer II is a fully experienced journey-level worker responsible for conducting probation presentence investigations for the courts and/or doing field supervision of adult and/or juvenile probationers. An appointee must be willing to work in a variety of assignments and could be assigned to a specialized Field Unit where staff may be authorized to qualify and carry a firearm for certain aspects of their job duties.

To qualify for appointment to a position, an applicant must:
  • be fully trained as a Deputy Probation Officer as mandated by California's Board of State and Community Corrections, which includes Basic Probation Officer Core (BPOC) and 832 (Peace Officer Arrest Powers) Training. Must be attached to the online application.
  • have a minimum of six months experience performing county probation field investigative or field supervision work in the state of California
  • meet State of California requirements for appointment to a peace officer position
  • have less than a three-year break in such service on the date of appointment to an Orange County position if not currently employed as a journey-level county field deputy probation officer in the State of California.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Applicants must have successfully completed any training required under the California Penal Code and regulations of the California Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission and California's Board of State and Community Corrections.

RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Human Resource Services screens all application materials for minimum and desirable qualifications. After screening, candidates who meet the minimum and desirable qualifications will be referred to the next step in the recruitment process. All candidates will be notified via email of their status in the process. 

Structured Oral Interview (SOI) | (Weighted 100%)
Candidates will be interviewed and rated by a qualification appraisal panel of job knowledge experts. Each candidate's rating will be based on responses to a series of structured questions designed to elicit the candidate's qualifications for the job.

Based on the Department's needs, the selection procedure listed above may be modified. All candidates will be notified of any changes in the selection procedure.

Eligible List
Once the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
