What are the responsibilities and job description for the COURT CLERK I - CIVIL ROSTER position at County of Orangeburg?
The purpose of this job is to assist the Clerk of Court, Deputy Clerk of Court and judges by performing routine and complex clerical work and providing excellent customer service to the public.
Assists and carries out clerical tasks in civil court of law by performing the following duties.
This class works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
Supervisory Functions:
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two to three years of clerical experience; and/or education in secretarial science or an Associate Degree in Business or equivalent from two-year college or technical school. Three years of office management experience preferred. Must possess typing and computer skills.
Special Certifications and Licenses:
Reasoning/Mathematical/Language Skills:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

- Processes new common pleas cases including appeals and PCR’s.
- Transmits data to court administration.
- Records judgments by indexing decisions in the computer and prepares printouts for attorneys.
- Prepares rosters for all terms of common pleas court and mails notices to attorneys.
- Communicates with attorneys to discuss case status, etc; coordinates and assists Judge with filling out orders, running errands, calling attorneys, and swearing witnesses.
- Records lis pendens and prepares printouts for attorneys.
- Answers incoming telephone calls and clocks in documents.
- Monitors status of civil cases as required by court administration.
- Attends roster meetings and maintains records on case status.
- Files all paperwork associated with common pleas.
- Provides back-up support to receptionist and Criminal Court Clerk as needed.
- Provides professional and courteous customer service at all times to in-house staff and general public either by telephone, electronically, or face to face.
- Cross train to other job functions within the Court Clerk I positions.
- Perform other duties and related work as instructed and assigned.

- This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
