Description
Performs intermediate work assisting the Sheriff’s Office on a variety of non-hazardous activities, observing, and reporting law and ordinance violations, preparing reports, responding to non-hazardous calls for assistance, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the close supervision of the Chief Deputy Sheriff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assists the Sheriff's Office on a variety of non-hazardous activities not requiring the services of a sworn officer.
- Assists deputies in routine patrol of lakes, trails, and county parks in Redwood County.
- Observes and assists law enforcement to report violations of laws and ordinances.
- Assists with the preparation of reports following oral and written instructions.
- Communicates and provides information to County staff and the public.
- Transports inmates, materials, and documentations.
- Assists in the collection and handling of physical evidence at crime scenes including taking fingerprints and photographs.
- Administers first aid to people who are injured.
- Responds to non-hazardous calls for assistance; assists law enforcement when conducting on-foot security patrols; communicates with emergency dispatch via radio.
- Answers phones, distributes messages, and assists walk-ins with inquiries or questions.
- Maintains current knowledge of applicable City, County, State, and Federal statutes, rules, and regulations, City and Department policies and procedures, and of modern law enforcement trends and practices.
- Attends work in a regular and timely manner.
- Serves as a positive example to other County personnel with regard to workplace actions, decisions, work skills, attitude and adherence to workplace policy and procedures.
- Communicates effectively with the Sheriff and Chief Deputy and keeps supervisor apprised of important matters ongoing in the department.
OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs other work-related duties as required.
WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT
The position has good working conditions in general but is a diversified job requiring sustained mental effort related to public contacts, organizational issues, planning and technical areas.
The individual may encounter significant emotional strain or tension. There is sustained exposure to public contact and sitting. May encounter emotionally or mentally disturbed people. EDP response and protocol. There is also moderate exposure to Video Data Terminals (VDTs) and moderate lifting (up to 50 pounds).
PUBLIC DATA
The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions Ch. 13. If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee’s work assignment no longer requires access.
Qualifications
EDUCATION:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be enrolled in a post-secondary education in a Law Enforcement related program.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Expected to obtain POST license within two years.
- Completion of First Aid/CPR and Emergency Medical Responder training within one year of hire.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Ability to listen and understand directives, write, and speak in an understandable and accurate manner, communicate information professionally and precisely, act in a decisive manner and use good judgement, anticipate needs and evaluate alternatives while avoiding over-reaction, exclude personal biases from performance, and produce high quality and accurate work.
- Possess the ability to perform basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
- Knowledge of correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation; knowledge of the organization's rules, policies, and procedures applicable to assigned function; skill in the use of personal computers.
- Be able to maintain prompt, predictable and reliable attendance.
- Ability to establish and maintain strong working relationships with others and to present ideas effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Must possess a valid MN Driver’s License and must be at least 18 years of age.
