What are the responsibilities and job description for the Parks & Facility Service Technician position at County of Roanoke Virginia?
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks in the sign shop operation and within the park system to service the park buildings and ground structures, county facilities, and the county street sign system. Assists the Parks Maintenance Service Specialist with tasks to fabricate, inspect, and install street signs and custom signs, support special events setups and support for general work orders. Incumbent also assists the MEO III Facility Technician to perform semi-skilled and skilled tasks in park settings for light construction and provide carpentry, electrical, and plumbing tasks for the repair and maintenance to park buildings and outside structures, and assist in servicing park well water systems. Performs related work as required.
.- Reads blueprints, designs, fabricates and builds custom signs and street signs using aluminum, metal, and wood materials.
- Uses various hand and power tools to build wood frames to specifications.
- Keeps accurate production and inventory records.
- Ability to read blueprints and understand production orders in order to calculate material lists.
- Ability to track supplies, order materials to maintain appropriate stock levels.
- Meets VDOT standards for the design, quality, and installation of street signs to support E-911 system.
- Maintains an inventory of essential tools, hardware, and materials in the sign shop truck to provide ability to immediately respond to emergency street sign repairs or replacement notifications.
- Assists the Service Specialist and Facility Technician to perform various tasks using electrical and gas powered hand tools to repair park buildings and outside structures.
- Repairs or replaces plumbing fixtures.
- Repairs or replaces electrical switches, receptacles, light fixtures, etc.
- Maintain and repair park buildings and outside structures.
- Operates tractors and implements and performs routine preventative maintenance on equipment.
- Demonstrate the ability to work well with the public, coworkers, and supervisors.
- Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs.
- Subject to 24 hour-call for county emergencies and snow removal operations.
- Must operate the sign shop and oversee the County work order program when supervisor is unavailable.
- Operates the Stage Line Mobile Stage for County events.
- Responsible for the opening, closing, and coordinating of work orders with County departments as well as verifying that the work order entry is accurate.
Preferred: High school diploma or equivalent
Experience
Required: Two or more years of experience in carpentry, electrical, and plumbing repairs and installations
Certifications/ Licenses
Required: Valid Virginia driver's license with a good driving record. Must have or be able to obtain Stage Line Operator Certification within 6 months of employment.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Must possess basic carpentry skills for construction of custom frames and draftsman skills for sign layouts and designs.
- Must be able to make precise and accurate measurement and execute detailed work.
- Must learn how to safely operate and maintain technical sign making equipment.
- Must be able to safety operate tractors and implements.
- Must be able to effectively demonstrate good public relations and communication skills.
- Ability to assess and perform routine plumbing and electrical repairs in parks buildings and outside structures.
- Assist Technician with the care and maintenance of HVAC, potable well water systems, and septic systems.
- Knowledge and expertise in the operation and input of information in the County's computerized work order system.
Additional Requirements

Salary : $35,975 - $39,572
