What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tax Compliance Deputy position at County of Roanoke Virginia?
Performs difficult clerical and technical work to secure compliance with County laws regarding the reporting and assessment of the tax on prepared food and beverages. Administers the transient room occupancy tax, utility services tax, bank franchise tax, and financial reports. Interprets state and County tax laws to assist and inform businesses of the responsibilities and procedures for reporting and remitting taxes.~ Greets all visitors (in person or phone) to the department, accepts inquiries, ascertains nature of business and assists or re-directs as appropriate while providing excellent customer service
~ Primary duties revolve around the tax on prepared food and beverages
~ Advises business officials of the tax laws and filing procedures
~ Administers and reviews reports and remittances from utility companies for the utility services tax
~ Administers and reviews reports and remittances from hotels and motels of the transient occupancy tax
~ Utilizes a computer or other information processing equipment for administering the tax on prepared food and beverages in a variety of applications such as data entry, file manipulation and generating printouts
~ Work with staff to perform field investigations to determine if businesses are in compliance with the tax on prepared food and beverages ordinance
~ Work with staff to perform field visits to businesses to explain the reporting and remitting of the tax on prepared food and beverages
~ Work with staff to complete business audits
~ Maintains accurate detailed records and files
~ Assists the public by answering a variety of questions
~ Composes and types correspondence
~ Performs assessments and exonerations
~ Operates a variety of office equipment and software
~ Answers inquiries and investigates complaints concerning filing procedures of personal property.
~ Completes the annual bank franchise tax information.
~ Provide regular reporting of delinqent accounts
~ Performs other duties as assignedEducation:
Required: High school or equivalent
Preferred: Associates degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Management or related field.
Experience:
Preferred: Considerable familiarity with the operations of the Office of the Commissioner of the Revenue.
Certifications/Licenses:
Encouraged to enroll in the Master Deputy program through the Weldon Cooper center at UVA.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of state and local tax laws with special emphasis on regulations regarding business license taxes, personal property taxes, utility services taxes, transient occupancy taxes, and taxes on prepared food and beverages; and of office terminology procedures, equipment, and business mathematics. Knowledge of clerical techniques and tax procedures; and of the assessment of personal property taxes and of business licensing. Ability to maintain records and generate reports; to work well with other employees, the public, and business officials; resolve conflicts; and to operate a variety of office equipment. Strong communication skills.

Salary : $45,723 - $50,295
