What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transportation Engineer position at County of Roanoke Virginia?
Performs complex professional and technical work related to the planning, design, scheduling, construction, maintenance, and operation of the County’s transportation system. Responsible for layout, design, and material cost estimates for transportation related projects. Utilizes computer aided design systems to support the development of plans, projects, and programs. Assists in investigating, analyzing, and responding to internal, citizen, community organization, and business inquiries/complaints concerning any transportation related issue. Reviews traffic studies and development plans and makes appropriate recommendations. Performs other duties as assigned.~ Develops construction plans using manual and automated design methods/systems. Performs complex calculations to compute horizontal and vertical alignments. Designs and calculates quantities and cost estimates for storm drainage, grading/ excavation, pavement, etc. as it relates to transportation projects. Assists with the field survey, preparation and plotting of information.
~ Assists in developing bids and RFP specifications related to transportation projects.
~ Assists with the development and revision of standards and specifications for access management, private roads, public streets, parking design, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, greenways, and blueways.
~ Assist in developing and coordinating traffic calming projects, safety improvement projects, and pedestrian and bicycle plans.
~ Investigate, analyze, and respond to internal, citizen, community organizations, and business requests concerning any transportation related issue.
~ Prepares detailed transportation related maps, studies, reports, and records.
~ Research deeds and other records of land ownership, easements, right-of-way etc.
~ Conduct field investigations regarding transportation-related projects as needed.
~ Act as a representative of the County to coordinate with VDOT and various organizations during the planning, design and implementation of various transportation projects.
~ Attends citizen meetings and civic league meetings and provides technical assistance covering the County’s transportation system.
~ Performs other duties as assigned.Education:
Required: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited or university with major coursework in civil engineering or related field, or combination of training, education, and considerable experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the work described.
Experience:
Required: Three (3) or more years experience in computer aided design (preferably AutoCAD).
Preference: Experience with ESRI GIS products.
Certifications/Licenses:
Required: Valid Virginia driver’s license with good driving record.
Preferred: Recognition as Engineer-in-Training (EIT) in the Commonwealth of Virginia or background sufficient to obtain.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of civil engineering principles, practices, and techniques as applied to transportation construction and maintenance projects; and computer aided drafting (CAD) techniques, preferably AutoDesk, AutoCAD, and CAD standards. Ability to operate standard Microsoft Office software. Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate project activities, review and interpret plans and recommend effective actions; to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing; to coordinate multiple assignments within scheduled timeframes; and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, including other localities and VDOT.
