The Senior Landscape Architect provides professional landscape architectural services with planning, design, and development of projects in connection with parks, parkways, recreation areas, County transportation systems, County buildings and facilities. Responsibilities include enforcement of the Sacramento County Tree Preservation and Protection Ordinance and other ordinances/legislation related to environmental land use and landscaping issues.
The Senior Landscape Architect, under general direction, performs administrative supervisory responsibilities over scheduling, budgeting, and coordinating the preparation and development of complex site plans and design of major landscape development projects; responsible for the more complex and comprehensive landscape architectural planning and design decisions; reviews and comments on environmental documents and inspects or directs the inspection and enforcement of land development projects for conformance to ordinances/legislation designated for the preservation or enhancement of natural and historic resources; negotiates and administers consultant contracts and reviews the work of consultants; coordinates, advises and serves as liaison with other County Departments, City, State, and other community agencies on landscape architectural and related land use programs and projects.Knowledge of
- methods of planning and administering a variety of landscape architectural and site layout programs
- principles of current landscape architecture technology, design, and landscape construction methods including some elements of engineering principles as applied to landscape architecture
- facility planning and site analysis as related to park and recreational development, transportation systems, and other developments
- principles of soil science, planting and irrigation techniques
- landscape maintenance procedures
- native and exotic plant materials best adapted to specific uses
- Federal, State, and County ordinances and legislation which impact landscape architectural practices and procedures including the Sacramento County Tree Preservation and Protection Ordinance and Water Conserving Landscape Requirements Ordinance
- construction codes and ordinances
- principles of program and project management including budget preparation and monitoring and contract negotiation and administration
- principles and techniques of human resource management including supervision
- selection, staff development/training, and performance evaluation
- plan, organize, direct and monitor the work of subordinate professional and technical staff
- coordinate work with affected County and other public agencies
- prepare or direct the preparation of sketches, plans, construction documents and cost estimates for landscape architectural projects
- demonstrate artistic and creative aptitude; evaluate engineering and/or architectural features and design solutions for compatibility to proposed landscape projects
- enforce applicable ordinances and legislation related to landscaping and land use issues
- prepare complex technical reports, contract documents, and correspondence
- make effective verbal presentations to community groups and other governmental bodies
- establish effective working relationships with employees, private consultants and contractors, public officials, agencies, and the public.
Possession of a valid license as a Registered Landscape Architect issued by the California Board of Landscape Architects.
Note: If the word “experience” is referenced in the minimum qualifications, it means full-time paid experience unless the minimum qualification states that volunteer experience is acceptable. Part-time paid experience may be accumulated and pro-rated to meet the total experience requirements.
Special Requirements
Driver’s License Requirement: A valid California Driver's License, Class C or higher will be required prior to appointment.
NOTE: Failure to maintain the appropriate valid California Driver's License required for this class constitutes cause for termination from the class in accordance with Civil Service Rule 11.4.
Probationary Period
The probationary period for this classification is twelve (12) months.APPLICATION

FORMULA RATE EXAMINATION (Weighted 100%)
All candidates meeting the minimum qualifications by the cut-off date will have their Supplemental Questionnaire scored in the Formula Rate Examination.
This examination will evaluate the relevance, level, recency, progression and quality of candidate's education, training and experience. The candidate's application or other materials will not be included in this examination. Therefore, the candidate's responses to the supplemental questionnaire should be thorough, detailed and complete. The score from the Formula Rate Examination will determine the ranking on the eligible/employment list for this job.
All candidates competing in the testing process will receive written notice of their examination results by email. Notices can also be accessed in their governmentjobs.com inbox. Applicants achieving a passing score will be placed on the eligible list in rank order. The rank is determined by the test score attained from the examination.
