ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN II

If so, the County of San Diego is currently accepting applications for Engineering Technician II in order to establish a six-month eligible list. This list may be used to fill vacancies in all divisions or assignments within Public Works and the Department of Planning & Development Services. The list will be used to fill current vacancies in the Capital Improvement Program and Construction Engineering teams within Public Works.
Capital Improvement Program Position
The Capital Improvement Program is responsible for overall management and coordination of planning, budget, design, environmental clearance and permitting, right-of-way acquisition and utility coordination for a wide variety of capital projects, including road, bridge, flood control, drainage, airport, and wastewater projects. Some of the duties and responsibilities for this position include:
- Preparing civil engineering design drawing with guidance from staff engineers
- Utilize Civil 3D for infrastructure site plans to prepare plan and profile sheets
- Prepare diagrams and exhibits using Civil 3D for design projects
Construction Engineering Position
Construction Engineering provides administrative, technical, fiscal, and scheduling controls for capital improvement construction contracts. The Engineering Technician II performs technical and engineering work required for the enforcement, investigation, inspection, design, construction, and maintenance of engineering projects and records. Some of the duties and responsibilities for this position include:
- Assist in engineering surveys
- Prepare field notes, plots, sketches, maps, plans, legal descriptions and street light layouts
- Perform engineering calculations.
- Provide para-professional engineering support to engineers, surveyors, or program managers.

Hiring Timeline & Dates
- Job Offer and Background Process begins the week of June 9, 2025. Note: Current County employees may be excluded from additional background screening.
- Pre-employment Medical Screening: Approximately 3 days following successful background investigation results.
- Anticipated Start Date: Start date will be based upon successful completion of medical screening or other mutually agreed upon date.
Minimum Qualifications
- Three (3) years paraprofessional engineering or surveying experience performing one or more of the following: construction inspection; materials testing; field surveying; traffic data collection and analysis; drafting and statistical computations for design and public works projects; subdivision, parcel map and records of survey checking; and/or real property engineering involving legal descriptions, drafting and research; OR,
- Three (3) years of college level course work in engineering or surveying; OR,
- Any combination of education and experience described above which equals three (3) years; OR,
- One (1) year as an Engineering Technician I in the County of San Diego.
Note: Thirty (30) college semester units in engineering is considered equivalent to one (1) year of work experience.

Evaluation
The names of qualified applicants will be placed on a six (6) month employment list based on scores received during the evaluation of information provided on the employment and supplemental applications.
