Under close supervision of the Communications Supervisor, the Radio Communication Technician Intern will assist in developing, maintaining, inspecting, and repairing the communication system infrastructure for all two-way radio systems, microwave and fiber optic systems, antenna systems, Repeater/Base stations, and associated equipment for San Juan County. 
  • Must currently be a full-time high school or college student.
  • Valid State of New Mexico Driver's license or able to obtain within six(6)months of employment.
  • Work is performed in an outdoor environment with prolonged exposure to heat and cold.  
  • May be subject to bending, reaching, kneeling, and lifting in the operation of daily duties.
  • May be required to lift and carry equipment such as batteries, test equipment, and radio equipment potentially weighing more than 70 pounds to and from communication sites.
  • Work hours for this position are limited to 20 Hours per week.  Days, and hours per day are flexible during the 4 day work week.  The Radio Communications Supervisor will determine schedules.

  • Assists in installing, maintaining, and repairing all San Juan County maintained communication systems including.
    • Repeaters, and Base Stations.
    • Mobile and Portable radios.
    • Antenna Systems, and Antenna Combining systems.
    • Backup power systems.  AC, and DC
    • Microwave systems.
    • Fiber Optic systems.
    • T1 channel banks, and equipment.
    • Ethernet connected systems.  Wide area, and Local area networks.
    • Remote-controlled equipment.
    • Dispatch Consoles
    • Alarm systems
    • Simulcast systems.
    • Generators.
    • Air-Conditioners.
    • Grounding and Lightning protection systems.
    • Tower Lighting systems.
    • PC/Laptop computers
    • Mobile & Portable radio programming.
  • Assists in testing systems to ensure proper operation; troubleshoots and diagnoses systems and equipment problems; determines and completes appropriate repairs.  
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
