What are the responsibilities and job description for the Vector Control Technician position at County of San Juan (NM)?
Under close supervision of the Vector Control Supervisor, perform vector detection, control, and prevention of insects and rodents. Perform work in accordance with established methods and techniques to protect public health. Safely applies variety of products and observes all safety requirements and regulations.• High School Diploma or GED equivalent, and two (2) years of relevant work experience.
• Must possess and maintain New Mexico Department of Agriculture Public Applicators License; obtain within sixty (60) from date of hire.
• Must possess and maintain New Mexico Department of Agriculture certifications in Right-of-Way & Industrial Weeds, Vertebrate Pests, and Public Health Pests; obtain within sixty (60) from date of hire.
• Valid State of New Mexico Driver’s License or able to obtain within six (6) months of employment.• Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment; may be required to lift and carry items more than 50 pounds.
• May be exposed to dangerous machinery, potential physical harm, fumes and airborne particles and extreme weather conditions. Noise level is usually loud.
• Work schedule for this position may include working on religious holidays.

- Perform control and prevention efforts of mosquitos, prairie dogs, gophers, rodents, weeds by complying with vector control methods.
- Perform field inspections, report findings to supervisor, and use prescribed application methods.
- Safely apply chemicals in accordance to state, federal, and local environmental vector control regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of chemical used in applications, complaints, spray areas, trap data, and other field activities in compliance with New Mexico Department of Agriculture.
- Target pest identification; use a variety of trap and methods to collect field samples; handle, inspect, log, and report samples found.
- Tactfully communicate with the general public concerning vector control, pesticide usage, and mosquito borne diseases.
- Investigate complaints/concerns and responds to citizen inquiries; share knowledge of vector control methods with the general public.
- Assist with stocking and maintaining chemical inventory; comply with OSHA standards for safe handling and storage methods.
- Performs routine, unskilled, manual labor.
- Operate, maintain, and calibrate equipment.
- Clean, maintains and stores assigned tools and equipment.
- Perform basic repair work of a routine and minor nature.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
