Radiology Assistants perform a variety of basic and routine patient support care duties within the Radiology and Imaging departments. Under the directions of a Lead Radiologic Technologist, they provide direct patient care, including the safe transport of patients within San Mateo Medical Center, preparation of patients for imaging procedures, and ordering departmental supplies related to imaging.
There is one full-time, limited-term vacancy. The limited-term position is expected to last until the end of November 2025. This role requires flexibility to cover varied shifts, including evenings and weekends.
The ideal candidate will possess:- Prior experience in a healthcare setting, preferably in radiology.
- Familiarity with imaging procedures and patient preparation.
- Knowledge of infection control, HIPAA regulations, and patient rights.
- Ability to safely transport patients and lift/move heavy equipment.
- Familiarity with medical record systems and the ability to enter/retrieve patient data.
- Ability to work with a diverse patient population, including those with multiple diagnoses.
- A Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification issued by the American Heart Association.
Note: This is a limited term, at-will position. Limited Term Employees are assigned to assignments not to exceed three years. They receive medical and dental benefits, similar to regular employees, and a defined contribution retirement plan.
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Escort Imaging patients to dressing areas and to patient exam rooms.
- Lift and assist patients onto imaging tables.
- Safely transport patients to and from other patient units such as the Emergency Room, Outpatient Clinics or In-patient units.
- Observe and practice proper isolation techniques.
- Prepare patient history or other questionnaires for Imaging procedures.
- Assemble patient case files including film jackets, worksheets, films and QC monitors.
- Assist technologists in equipment measurements, lead apron checks, and darkroom maintenance.
- Assist radiologists with film hanging, case presentations, Quality Improvement monitoring.
- Develop X-ray film, maintain film inventory.
- Maintain records of patient procedures and unit activity.
- Transport specimens, medical records and related items.
- Lift heavy items such as supplies and equipment.
- Enter and retrieve a variety of information in computer systems.
- Perform film file room tasks including film filing, pulling jackets as requested, purging.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- Basic principles, techniques and procedures in delivering safe patient care within scope of duties including:
- Total body substance isolation.
- Patients' rights including HIPPA regulations and elder abuse reporting requirements.
- Infection control.
- Basic diagnostic imaging procedures and principles.
- Safe lifting techniques.
Skill/Ability to:
- Learn hospital techniques and procedures.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Perform a variety of routine tasks and activities.
- Develop and maintain empathetic attitudes toward patients.
- Provide assistance in delivering patient care in a medical setting such as patient escort, interviews, scheduling, Imaging procedures.
- Observe and record patient conditions, histories, procedure information.
- Lift and transport patients and heavy items such as supplies and equipment.
- Work with patients with multiple diagnoses.
- Work with a culturally, socio-economically diverse patient population of varying ages.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to qualify is:
- Option 1 – Currently enrolled in a medical training program such as a nursing, Radiologic Technologist, Respiratory Therapy, Laboratory Technologist or other similar program.
- Option 2 - Outpatient care: One year of experience in a hospital or doctor’s office as a nurse's assistant, hospital attendant or medical assistant.
- Option 3 - Acute or long term care: One year of experience in a hospital, institution or approved nursing home as a nurse's assistant, orderly, ward aide or hospital attendant.
