What are the responsibilities and job description for the Road Maintenance Worker II (Open and Promotional) position at County of San Mateo?
Road Maintenance Worker IIs operate a variety of trucks, light and medium duty road maintenance equipment, and perform a variety of semi-skilled and manual tasks in the maintenance of roadways, creeks, channels, associated landscape areas, storm drains, and other maintenance activities.
Duties associated with Road Maintenance and Construction may include, but are not limited to, the following:- Drive and operate street sweepers, paint trucks, tree trucks, lumber trucks, power brooms, mowers, water trucks, dump trucks, etc.
- Tow various types of trailers and attachments, such as transport trailers, equipment tilt trailer, rollers, compressors, pavers, chip spreaders, etc.
- Operate light equipment used in trenching and pipe repair and replacement work including small tractors, light trucks, pumps, service tapping machines, generators, compressors and allied air tools, forks, and shoring equipment.
- Service and make minor and emergency repairs to trucks and equipment.
- Prepare simple records and reports.
- Instruct personnel in the proper operation of trucks and equipment.
- May act as lead worker or, in the absence of the Road Maintenance Supervisor, act as Supervisor for a crew.
- Dig, level, slope, shovel, sweep and remove debris from drainage ditches and culverts.
- Prepare and patch holes in small, paved areas.
- Shovel, rake, roll and smooth asphalt and gravel in patching work.
- Cut, trim, and dispose of brush and weeds.
- Cut, trim, and remove tree limbs and fallen trees.
- Prepare ground for and lay concrete and culvert pipe.
- Slope and prepare road shoulders and bank for seeding.
- Dig ditches for and install culvert pipe.
- Act as safety flag-person.
- Assist Construction Carpenter/Mason in the building of concrete forms.
- Cut and refinish streets, sidewalks and driveways, lay cement and asphalt.
- Maintain guard rails and shoulders.
- Load and unload trucks.
- Periodically required to be in an "on-call" status and to be available for work in emergencies outside of normal working hours.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
License:
Valid Class A, Commercial Driver License with a tank vehicle endorsement is required. A copy of the Class A CDL license must be submitted with application.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.
- A typical way to qualify is six months experience driving trucks of at least six cubic yards capacity OR satisfactory completion of the County-sponsored truck driver training class or equivalent.
Knowledge of:
- Provisions of the California Vehicle Code applying to the operation of vehicles.
- Safety practices in connection with light and medium duty road maintenance equipment.
- Road maintenance and construction operations, materials and procedures.
- Operation and preventive maintenance of light and medium duty trucks and road construction equipment.
Skill/Ability to:
- Operate trucks and road maintenance equipment including street sweepers, sewer maintenance trucks, paint trucks, tree trucks, lumber trucks, power brooms, mowers, water trucks, dump trucks and asphalt rollers.
- Load equipment onto transport trailers, unload and tow various types of trailers.
- Perform road maintenance duties which require strength, agility and endurance.
- Instruct and train personnel in road maintenance worker tasks.
- Work courteously and effectively with the public and with co-workers.
- Follow oral and written instructions.
- Meet Department of Transportation (DOT) drug testing requirements and standards.

Current County of San Mateo and County of San Mateo Superior Court of California employees with at least six months (1040 hours) of continuous service in a classified regular, probationary, or extra-help/limited term position prior to the final filing date will receive five points added to their final passing score on this examination.
In addition, a copy of the Class A Commercial driver license must be attached to the application.
