The Position :
The Mapping / GIS Technician role prepares, revises, and maintains a variety of maps and mapping-related records, documents, spatial databases, reports, aerial photographs, and graphic presentations in order to support departmental and / or countywide operations and decision-making; occasionally performs work in the field, and performs related duties as required.
The current vacancy is with the Clerk, Recorder, Assessor and Elections Office (CRA) and is based in beautiful downtown Santa Barbara, with easy access to alternative transportation options. The role in this department is on-site. This position offers variety as it supports both the Assessor's and Elections offices. This position will also interact and take an active part in participating in the County's newly created enterprise GIS effort.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS : Mapping / GIS Technician is an entry / journey-level paraprofessional classification. Incumbents prepare electronic and hard-copy maps and other graphic presentations using a variety of computer-assisted mapping hardware and software; and create and maintain spatial databases and layers. Mapping / GIS Technician is distinguished from Mapping / GIS Analyst in that the Analyst class is a professional class responsible for generating complex maps and graphic presentations; performing geospatial and tabular data analysis involving independent judgment; and / or providing technical / professional cartography consultation and support to management, boards, advisory groups and the public.
Duties performed and technology used by incumbents in this class may vary depending on department or work assignment; however, all incumbents are expected to learn and apply new technology as required by the hiring department. Furthermore, Mapping / GIS Technician is part of a flexibly staffed class series; however, flex promotion from Mapping / GIS Technician to Mapping / GIS Analyst is not automatic. It is dependent upon management needs and the type and level of duties assigned.

Additional Qualifications for Fire Department : Obtain within two (2) years of date of hire and maintain currency of Geographic Information System Specialist (GISS) certification from the California Incident Command Certification System (CICCS)
Knowledge of : terminology, materials, and methods used in automated map drafting and related graphic illustration; basic computer graphics and computer-aided design software; basic concepts of geographic information systems (GIS); basic mathematics used in map production, including computation of distances, angles, areas, and traverses.
Ability to : use computer-aided mapping, graphics drawing, scanning, office, and spreadsheet software; read and interpret complex legal information; follow oral and written instructions; work cooperatively with others; and learn and perform basic aerial photo interpretation.
Fire Department Ability to : Work in the field to verify and obtain geographic, cartographic, community infrastructure, fire protection features, and wildland fire perimeter data and / or other fire and GIS related information.
Desirable Qualifications : Associate's degree in geography or other physical or natural science; coursework or familiarity in land use planning and environmental studies, surveying, navigation and global positioning systems, graphic arts, mechanical drafting and computer aided drafting, engineering, document layout, reprographics, aerial photo interpretation, photogrammetry, and / or website creation; and / or experience using GIS software.

Selection Process
Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list.
NOTE : Veteran's preference credit is applicable for this recruitment (5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans). To be eligible for this credit, you must be applying for this position within five years from your most recent date of : (1) honorable discharge from active military service; or, (2) discharge from a military or veterans' hospital where treatment and confinement were for a disability incurred during active military service; or, (3) completion of education or training funded by a Federal Educational Assistance Act.
