The Santa Barbara County Public Health Department (County Health) is currently accepting applications to fill one (1) Full-Time, bilingual English / Spanish, Pharmacy Technician position at the Santa Barbara Health Care Clinic in Santa Barbara. Travel throughout the County may be required.

  • Civil Service Rule 1414. Appointment to Fill Vacancy During Leave of Absence. 1414 vacancies may occur as a result of a leave of absence and the duration of the appointment shall be subject to the return of the individual who is on leave.   • POSITION : Under direct supervision of a registered pharmacist, prepares, packages, and distributes medications; performs clerical duties related to the operation of a pharmacy; and performs other related duties as required.

    DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS : Incumbents are authorized to perform routine tasks related to the filling of prescriptions, including tasks requiring the physical handling, counting, mixing, and packaging of pharmaceuticals. All of the Technician's work related to the filling of prescriptions must be reviewed and approved by a registered pharmacist.

    This class is further distinguished from the class of Pharmacist in that incumbents may not interpret prescriptions or perform any discretionary tasks related to the filling of prescriptions that must be performed by a registered pharmacist.

    The IDEAL CANDIDATE will possess :

  • Bilingual Speaking, Reading and Writing skills in English and Spanish;
  • Ability to provide exceptional customer service;
  • Ability to follow all policies, procedures, and adhere to all pharmacy laws;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to work as a contributing member of a pharmacy team;
  • Knowledge related to understanding insurance billing and calculating proper days' supply;
  • At least 2 years of experience as a licensed Pharmacy Technician in the State of California.

    Examples of Duties

  • Selects drugs from stock for preparation; counts, pours, or mixes pharmaceuticals; places pharmaceutical products in appropriate containers and affixes labels to containers; packages and repackages pharmaceuticals to other clinics.
  • Monitors prescription inventory for expired pharmaceuticals that must be returned to manufacturer; receives and prices incoming pharmaceuticals; verifies invoices and statements.
  • Receives prescriptions and obtains information from patients at pharmacy window to determine financial class and eligibility; using a computerized system, enters prescription data to create a patient profile and prescription label; prepares and maintains patient profile with notations for pharmacist's review; performs clerical accounting duties related to billing and eligibility.
  • Answers telephone and takes messages for patient refill requests and related pharmacy business; maintains the pharmacy in a clean and orderly condition; performs data entry for the Pathway billing and MIA Medi-Cal re-billing.
  • Employment Standards

  • Possession of a valid certificate of registration as a Pharmacy Technician issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.
  • Additional Requirement : Registration must be kept valid throughout the term of employment as a Pharmacy Technician.

    Knowledge of : pharmacy practices and procedures; clerical and recordkeeping practices and procedures, including patient billing; drug names and generic equivalents; pharmaceutical dosage forms and strengths; common medical terms and abbreviations; units of measure.

    Ability to : operate a computer and learn the department's computer system; learn and apply eligibility requirements; learn and use department's billing procedures; read physicians' prescription orders; perform simple arithmetical computations, measurements, and conversions; maintain confidentiality; perform detailed work.

    Supplemental Information

    APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS :

  • Review applications and supplemental questionnaires to determine those applicants who meet the employment standards.
  • Supplemental Questionnaire Ranking : Responses to the required supplemental questionnaire will be evaluated and auto-scored. Candidates' final score and rank on the employment list will be determined by their responses to the supplemental questionnaire. This process may be eliminated if there are fewer than 11 qualified candidates.
  • Candidates must receive a percentage score of at least 70 on the supplemental questionnaire ranking to be placed on an employment list. An adjustment may be made to raw scores based on factors listed in Civil Service Rule VI. Those candidates who are successful in the selection process will have their names placed on the employment list for a minimum of three months. At the time the employment list is established, all candidates will receive written notice of their score on the exam(s), rank on the employment list, and exact duration of the employment list.

    Veteran's Points : Veteran's preference credit is applicable for this recruitment (5 points for veterans, 10 points for disabled veterans). To be eligible for this credit, you must be applying for this position within five years from your most recent date of : (1) honorable discharge from active military service; or, (2) discharge from a military or veterans' hospital where treatment and confinement were for a disability incurred during active military service; or, (3) completion of education or training funded by a Federal Educational Assistance Act. No time limit exists for veterans with 30% or more disability.

    To receive veteran's preference points, you must : (1) check the Veteran's Preference Points box on the employment application form, (2) submit a copy of your Form DD214 to the Human Resources Department on or before the closing date, and (3) pass all phases of the examination process. The preference points will be added to your final test score.
