We are currently accepting applications for Extra-Help Heavy Truck Drivers in the Resource Recovery and Waste Management Division of the Public Works Department in Santa Barbara.

Civil Service Rule (CSR) 905 Extra-Help Appointments: An extra-help appointment is defined as an appointment made to a non-regular, non-permanent position established on a temporary basis to meet peak loads, unusual work situations, seasonal and recurrent work, intermittent assignments, or emergencies.

Benefits will be offered once extra-help employees reach Affordable Care Act (ACA) eligibility.

THE POSITION: Under general direction, drives diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles in transporting refuse and recyclable material; performs skilled work in the operation of loaders and other power equipment at refuse transfer stations and landfills; and performs related duties as required.

The IDEAL CANDIDATE will have:
 
  • Ability to operate a manual transmission semi-truck trailer
  • Flexibility, a positive attitude, and an impeccable character
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to interact with all levels of internal and external customers
  • Ability to prepare and write clear and concise daily work reports which will be turned in at the end of the work day
  • Ability to work well independently and as a team player
  • Ability to be open to change and new information, and adapt behavior and work methods in response to new information, changing conditions, and unexpected obstacles
  • The ability to exercise appropriate judgment in answering questions and releasing information; analyzing and projecting consequences of decisions and/or recommendations
  • Two (2) or more years of experience driving semi-truck, tractor with a 48 foot or larger trailer
  • Wheel loader experience which includes loading different size trailers
  • Demonstrated ability in using a weighing system to load various payload sizes
  • Computer savvy
The Public Works Department

  1. Operates a diesel tractor-trailer combination of four or more axles in transporting refuse and recyclable material; maintains operator log; and computes axle weights to ensure that load is within legal limits.
  2. Operates loaders for compacting and loading of refuse and recyclable materials into trucks for transfer to other sites; and operates other equipment including dump trucks, water trucks, bobcats, and forklifts.
  3. Performs minor repairs and servicing of equipment.
PLEASE NOTE:  A CLASS A DRIVER'S LICENSE IS REQUIRED AT THE TIME OF SUBMITTING YOUR RESUME TO THE HIRING DEPARTMENT.  YOU ARE ALSO REQUIRED TO OPERATE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION SEMI-TRUCK TRAILER. 

  1. One year of Class A driving experience operating diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles; or,
  2. experience as a Maintenance Worker II or Refuse Checker with Santa Barbara County, including 2000 hours of Class A driving experience operating diesel tractor-trailer combinations of four or more axles; or,
  3. a combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above and that provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Additional Qualifications: Possession of a valid California Class A Driver’s License is required. Appointees to this classification will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs prior to beginning work; once on the job, incumbents will be subject to mandatory testing for drugs and/or alcohol on a random, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, return-to-duty, and follow-up basis.

Knowledge of: mechanical operations and maintenance of diesel tractor-trailer combinations and heavy equipment; safe work practices; California Dept. of Motor Vehicles guidelines for truck inspections and regulations related to operating semi-tractor trailers with multiple axles; and basic math.

Ability to: operate a diesel tractor-trailer combination in a safe and efficient manner; obtain California Department of Motor Vehicles tanker endorsement; read and understand operating manuals, procedures and policies; write legibly to maintain logs; follow written and oral instructions; and work well with others.

Desirable Qualifications:
Knowledge of:
mechanical operations and basic maintenance of loaders, dump trucks, water trucks, bobcats, and forklifts.
Ability to: operate loaders, dump trucks, water trucks, bobcats, and forklifts in a safe and efficient manner; and identify hazardous wastes.Work schedule varies and includes holidays and weekends. Working conditions involve operating a truck and/or loader for ten-hour shift. Environmental conditions include exposure to wind, dust, rain, and hot and cold weather, as well as hazardous materials.
