Description
Under supervision, to provide direct patient care for the assigned patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse and operate all equipment used for the hemodialysis procedure.

Typical Tasks
- Sets up and operates all hemodialysis equipment;
- Assists licensed nurse with pre and post patient assessments and documentation;
- Places needle in access for initiation of treatment;
- Reports significant information or change in patient condition to the supervisor;
- Assists with all emergency operational procedures, including CPR and emergency situations related to dialysis treatment;
- Tests dialysate composition pre dialysis;
- Sets machine parameters per physician orders;
- Documents patient progress in electronic medical record;
- Collects blood samples for laboratory tests per physician orders;
- Terminates the dialysis treatment and safely discharges patient from unit;
- Assists in maintaining the infection control program;
- Assists in evaluating equipment and writes procedures necessary to operate equipment safely and effectively;
- Performs cleaning procedures of related medical equipment;
- May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
- Performs other related duties as required.
Employment Standards
Successful completion of an approved training program for patient care dialysis technicians approved by the Centers for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) and CMS certification as a Hemodialysis Technician.
Incumbents must maintain current CMS certification or vacate the position.
