Description
Under administrative direction, to plan, develop, manage and evaluate programs and projects which provide for the ranger operations of the County Regional Park System and to assist the public in the use of County park and recreation facilities and resources.
The Manager of Park Ranger Operations is responsible for the operations of all 28 Santa Clara County regional parks. The Manager of Park Ranger Operations works in collaboration with the Manager of Park Maintenance Services and other Parks personnel to ensure the Department meets the regional recreation, trail, and natural area needs of the public to achieve the vision of the parks system, through excellent customer service, high standards, budget acumen, employee recruitment and selection, data analysis, and the use of leveraged resources.
In order to qualify for the Manager of Park Ranger Operations position, applicants MUST possess a current California Penal Code Section 832 Powers of Arrest Certificate at the time of application, and a copy of the certification must be attached to the electronic application. A letter from a certified swim instructor issued within the last 12 months, verifying the ability to swim one hundred (100) yards within five (5) minutes must be attached to the application as well.
Typical Tasks
- Develops, recommends, evaluates and modifies plans, procedures and policies for the administration, management and operation of the Operations Division of the County Regional Park system;
- Reviews recommendations for personnel resource needs and the allocation of staff required to reach unit objects;
- Prepares and presents annual budget recommendations for the Operations Division;
- Monitors, evaluates and resolves issues and concerns of public safety and customer service within the Park System;
- Reviews incident reports, requests for grounds and facilities modifications;
- May perform a specialized staff assignment in areas such as public relations, park administration, recreation services and resource management;
- May assign, supervise and participate in the work of subordinate classes of Park Ranger and other personnel assigned to the park unit, such as : patrol of a park or recreational area; greeting and directing of park visitors; and interpreting the natural and historical features of a park area;
- May conduct formal and informal training of Park Rangers in such areas as : educational and interpretive programs; first aid techniques; departmental practices, policies and procedures;
- Provides assistance in emergency situations at their unit(s) or at all park locations;
- Prepares staff reports;
- Issues warnings and citations under appropriate laws or ordinances;
- May make court appearances;
- May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards
Possession of a four (4) year bachelor's degree from an accredited college in Environmental Resources, Natural Resources, Park Management, Recreation Management, or a closely related field.
Two (2) years as a Park Ranger Supervisor.
Possession of a two (2) year college degree from an accredited college.
Four (4) years of experience in the management, operation or protection of a park, forest, public recreational, or historical area two (2) of which should be as a Park Ranger Supervisor.
Possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment, and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County driver's permit upon
