ABOUT THE POSITION Extra help positions are hourly employees that may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Benefits are not included. Under supervision, to perform a variety of non-professional tasks in the field in support of agricultural and/or weights and measures inspection activities; and to do other work as required. IDEAL CANDIDATE The ideal candidate will be available to work from approximately mid-April through October 2025. They should be able to work independently, outdoors, in all types of weather and on any terrain. The ideal candidate will work with the public to obtain permission to place, maintain, inspect, and move insect traps or to survey and eradicate noxious weeds. They will be able to read and follow guidelines provided by the California Department of Food and Agriculture and be able to keep detailed records. The ideal candidate should have a general knowledge of entomology and plant identification. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Positions in this class assist Agricultural and Standards Investigators or Agricultural and Standards Program Assistants or Associates by performing a variety of routine and repetitive tasks that do not require licensing or the skill and knowledge of Investigators or Agricultural Program Assistants or Associates. Incumbents work either under direct supervision or independently within fixed guidelines.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Conducts pest detection surveys to locate, identify and control agricultural pests; prepares, mixes and applies chemicals for control of agricultural pests; performs a variety of routine maintenance repair duties on equipment and structures; drives to specific locations to place and service pest detection traps; inspects plant foliage and nursery stock for specific pest or disease in accordance with specific guidelines; collects crop samples from fields; assists in the inspection of weighing and measuring devices, carries weights and takes readings; assists inspecting and testing packaged goods for proper weight, measure or count and/or proper labeling; makes test purchases of consumer goods; maintains accurate field notes and reports; makes arithmetic calculations.
