The department employs architects and engineers who prepare construction plans as well as supervise construction of these facilities. The department also acts as the County's surveyor and processes subdivision and survey maps. It administers the County's solid waste management functions. The department also manages the County water agency. In addition, the Public Works Department oversees the operation and maintenance of several County service areas. These County service areas include both water and sewer districts along with road, lighting, and flood maintenance districts. The Roads Department, part of the Public Works Department, is responsible for maintaining about 1,200 miles of County roadways. The budget unit for Roads is funded solely from federal and state sources.ABOUT THE POSITIONExtra help positions are hourly employees that may work up to 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30). Benefits are not included.This position is in the Fall River Mills, CA. Service Area. Under close supervision, may perform unskilled or semi-skilled manual, clerical and laboratory work; may assist in studies and prepare written reports; and perform related work as required. May serve in various assignments in a variety of departments.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICSThis is an extra help classification performing a variety of routine support duties for various departments. May assist professional, paraprofessional and technical employees in the performance of their duties. May perform elements of these duties under close supervision. It may serve as a training platform for students and others with temporary employment. Incumbents may receive on-the-job instruction and perform work that will provide practical experience in their desired profession or field of study.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Receives instructions from staff members and applies knowledge to work situations; learns departmental policies, procedures and methods of operation; assists in the collection and analysis of data, prepares charts and reports; participates in case work and studies and prepares reports under the close supervision; drives a vehicle; performs incidental manual labor.Specific positions may include: Traffic Control Worker: Provide temporary traffic control for work zones within County right-of-way; perform flagging duties; drive pilot vehicle; receive and communicate specific instructions, clearly, firmly and courteously; be able to move and maneuver quickly; be able to control signaling devices, such as flags and paddles, to provide clear and positive guidance to motorists; understand and apply safe traffic control practices, sometimes in stressful or emergency situations; and recognize dangerous traffic situations and warn workers in sufficient time to avoid injury. Traffic Control Workers will be required to take and pass a certification class provided by the County.Other Assignments, Departments may assign a wide variety of duties of a nature appropriate to this job description, depending upon the specific business needs of the department.
