CURRENT OPENING IN GAZELLE - DISTRICT 3
Under general supervision, to perform a variety of assignments in the maintenance, repair, and construction of roads, bridges, landfill, and drainage systems; to operate light equipment; and to do related work as required. This classification is a for cause, non-exempt position.
Distinguishing Characteristics
This is the first experienced working level in the Road Maintenance Worker class series. Incumbents are assigned to variety of maintenance, repair, construction, and light equipment operation assignments. They may operate heavy construction and maintenance equipment, similar to that operated by a Road Maintenance Worker II, in a training capacity, or, on an emergency basis. Incumbents are not expected to display the same level of skill and accuracy in heavy equipment operation required of a Road Maintenance Worker II. Incumbents in this class are subject to twenty-four hour call-out for road related emergencies and snow removal. This classification may be flexibly staffed, if allocated to the hiring department as flexibly staffed.

Essential Functions :
- Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties in the maintenance, construction, and repair of county roads, bridges, landfills sites, and related facilities; performs oil and chip seal work on roads; performs sign maintenance and repair; performs semi-skilled concrete work in the construction and maintenance of culverts, and related structures; mixes and places concrete; cuts and prepares roads for patches, spreads pre-mix and oil; rakes asphalt; performs maintenance functions such as cutting brush, clearing culverts, and cleaning ditches; operates hand tools such as jackhammers and chain saws; assists with the maintenance and repair of construction equipment; performs routine servicing of equipment such as changing oil and filters; may serve as flag person for road repair and maintenance crews; may transport road maintenance equipment throughout the county using proper tie down techniques; may perform minor building and grounds works; uses a shovel work to open, widen, and backfill excavations; removes objects and dead animals from the roads; checks roads for hazards; maintains records of materials and equipment used; communicates with the public during flagging duties; operates a two-way radio; learns to operate a variety of power-driven equipment such as crawlers, tractors, loaders, power booms, chippers, graders, and other power-driven equipment; uses backhoe attachments on appropriate equipment; operates trucks in the hauling of road fill and base materials for construction, maintenance, and repair projects; may operate snow removal equipment; places sand on slick and / or icy roads;

NOTE : This job classification is required to participate in the County of Siskiyou Drug and Alcohol Testing program as mandated by the Department of Transportation. Applicants will be required to submit to a pre-employment / pre-duty drug test. This position will also be subject to random drug and alcohol tests once employed by the County.

Frequently stand and walk; ability to sit for up to three hours; walk for long distances and on sloped ground and slippery and uneven surfaces; normal manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; ability to lift material weighing over 100 pounds with assistance; ability to bend, stoop, kneel, crawl, and crouch; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; ability to wear safety and protective clothing such as hard hats, safety glasses / goggles, ear plugs, respirators, gloves, boots and chemical resistant clothing; use of maintenance equipment as well as hand tools, chain saws, grinders, drill press, and jackhammer.
Typical Working Conditions
Work is performed outside in varying temperature, weather, and humidity conditions; sometimes works alone and in remote locations; work is performed in an environment with constant noise; exposure to roadgasses, solvents, oil, fumes, dust, grease and oils; exposure to moving equipment, exposure to electrical current; constant contact with staff and the public.

Holidays :
12 paid holidays per year. Full-time employees accrue twenty-six (26) floating holiday hours on the paycheck that includes January 1 of each year. Part-time accrue a pro-rata of floating holiday hours on the paycheck that includes January 1 of each year. Employees hired during the year will receive prorated floating holiday hours with the hours being rounded to the nearest onethird (4 months) of the year.
Vacation :
Employees with less than five (5) years of continuous employment will accrue 3.08 hours of vacation leave per pay period.
Employees with five (5) years but less than ten (10) years of continuous employment will accrue 4.62 hours of vacation leave per pay period.
Employees with ten (10) or more years of continuous employment will accrue 6.16 hours of vacation leave per pay period. The maximum vacation accrual is 312 hours.
Employees will be allowed to accrue above their vacation accrual limits during the calendar year. Employees who on the first full pay period in January of any year exceed the vacation maximum of 312 hours, will not accrue additional vacation hours until the vacation balance is reduced to the limit allowed.
Sick Leave :
Employees will accrue sick leave at the rate of 3.7 hours per pay period. Part-time employees will accrue sick leave on a pro-rated basis.
Employees may use up to forty-eight (48) hours annually for the care of an immediate family member. "Family Member" is defined as parent, child, spouse, registered domestic partner, parent-in-law, sibling, grandchild or grandparent.
Upon retirement employees may convert unused sick leave towards CalPERS service credit. Employees with five (5) or more years of continuous service, upon death or retirement may receive 33 1 / 3% of the monetary value of their accrued and unused sick leave in excess of 96 hours with a maximum payout of $1500.
Health & Dental Plan :
The County contracts for employee, dependents, retirees and dependents medical insurance benefit plans through the CalPERS Public Employees Medical and Hospital Care Program.
Effective plan year 2023, the County will contribute up to the following amounts towards employee medical insurance coverage and cafeteria plan benefits :

Vision Plan :
The County will contribute 100% of the vision premium.

Boot Allowance : The County provides employees a boot allowance of $150.00 annually on the first full pay period in July.
For newly hired employees, the boot allowance will be paid after they have successfully completed the probationary period and will be pro-rated based on the pay periods remaining in the fiscal year in which they complete probation.
Deferred Compensation (457) plans available through specified companies.
IRS Section 125 - flexible spending plan available for pre-tax payroll deductions for contributions towards un-reimbursed medical expenses and dependent care.
Rural Area Premium Pay : Effective June 12, 2022 employees who are routinely and consistently assigned to Forks of Salmon will receive Branch Assignment Premium in the amount of five percent (5.0%) of their base rate of pay.
