The Department of Child Support Services (DCS) seeks a Bilingual Legal Processor I to join their team! 

Starting salary up to $31.31/hour ($65,347/year) and a competitive total compensation package, an additional $1.50 per hour for fluent bilingual positions!

Please note: This position requires fluent bilingual skills in English and Spanish, including the ability to speak, read, and write in both languages.

As a Legal Processor I with the Department of Child Support Services, you will be responsible for greeting, assisting, and directing case participants to the appropriate staff. You will provide guidance on the procedures and processes for inquires on establishing and enforcing court orders. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Updating participants demographics
  • Working independently with a variety of legal documents
  • Rotating duties with Legal Processor team
  • Processing payments, housing verifications, and incoming, outgoing, and returned mail
  • Calling participants for early intervention reminders

As an ideal candidate you will possess many of the following:

  • One or more years of general clerical and/or legal support experience
  • The ability to interact and provide outstanding and empathetic customer service to a diverse community
  • Excellent communication skills in person and over the phone
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills
  • The ability to work independently and as a team
  • Patience and understanding when faced with challenging circumstances

This bilingual position requires English and Spanish skills at the fluent (reading, writing, and conversational) level. Applicants who wish to be considered for this fluent bilingual position must indicate their level of skill in the required supplemental questionnaire. An examination will be conducted prior to employment in a bilingual position to confirm the level of skill in this area. Bilingual premium pay is $1.50/hour for fluent bilingual skills.

This recruitment is being conducted to fill a fluent Bilingual Legal Processor I position. This employment list may also be used to fill future full-time, part-time, or extra-help (temporary) positions as they occur during the active status of the list. Qualified County employees who wish to be considered for future positions should consider applying to this recruitment.

Experience and Education: Any combination of education and work experience which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed herein. Normally, one year of clerical work experience in an office providing substantial customer service would provide this opportunity.

Special Skill Requirement: The ability to type at a corrected speed of 45 words per minute may be required for some assignments.

Background Requirements: Applicants for some assignments must successfully complete a thorough background investigation.

License: Possession of a valid driver's license at the appropriate level including special endorsements, as required by the State of California, may be required depending upon assignment to perform the essential job functions of the position.
Considerable knowledge of: basic arithmetic, English grammar, vocabulary, spelling, punctuation, and composition.

Working knowledge of: general clerical and office practices and procedures; word processing and other data processing programs used in business offices.

Ability to: understand, explain, and apply specific statutes, codes, laws, regulations, and procedures; maintain complex legal records, assemble materials and prepare reports; locate, identify and correct technical inaccuracies; work independently in performing assignment and in resolving problems and deviations; use independent initiative and discretion in organizing work and carrying out instructions within a structured environment; establish and maintain cooperative and harmonious relationships with judges, attorneys, litigants, law enforcement officials, other employees, and the general public; make accurate arithmetic calculations; operate a variety of office equipment.

The selection procedure will consist of the following examination:

An Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination (weight 100%) will be conducted to evaluate each applicant's application and supplemental questionnaire for satisfaction of minimum qualifications (pass/not pass); and for educational coursework, training, experience, knowledge, and abilities which relate to this position. Each applicant will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

  • Relevance of work history, related experience, and achieved level of education and/or training as described in the application and responses to the supplemental questions.

Candidates demonstrating possession of the minimum qualifications will be placed on an employment list in order of most qualified to least qualified based on the achieved score received in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination which evaluates the education, training, experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, and other qualifications that you demonstrate in your application and/or response to the supplemental questionnaire. Please be aware that resumes and cover letters are not typically evaluated in the Application & Supplemental Questionnaire Appraisal Examination. Scores may be adjusted based on such factors as the number of candidates, anticipated vacancies, past practice, and natural breaks in the scores achieved by this group of candidates.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

A background investigation is required prior to employment. Candidates referred to departments for a selection interview are typically required to sign authorization and release forms enabling such an investigation.
