POSITION SUMMARY

To plan, organize and execute public health education programs in the County; and to perform related work as required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

  • Identifies community health concerns and assists in the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of applicable health programs.
  • Participate in public health quality programs (e.g., Quality Improvement, Quality Assurance, Quality Control).
  • Ensure compliance with State of Michigan Accreditation requirements.
  • Work with community leaders, groups, and volunteers to address issues to effectively reach vulnerable populations.
  • Assist in data development for use in newsletters, web pages, or other educational materials.
  • Coordinate performance management related to PHAB
  • Attend community meetings related to PHAB items noted Assist in SCCHD grant processes (e.g., research, application development, and reporting)
  • Consults with supervisory staff to develop marketing strategies for department programs and services.
  • Prepares, edits, and disseminates information about health education, promotion, and department programs and services through social media, web updates, press releases, print materials, and display boards.
  • Creates and edits documents, photos, and videos for promotion, reporting, and documentation of events.
  • Ensures the integrity and effectiveness of departmental information presented to internal and external audiences.
  • Researches data, statistics, and health information and communicates information in language
  • and formats suitable to targeted audiences.
  • Assists in planning and organizing health education programming of suitable scope and activities to meet the needs of the community.
  • Participate in coalitions and health department led initiatives.
  • Assist the community in recognizing its health problems and in organizing to solve them.
  • Assist in establishing and maintaining close cooperative working relationships between all agencies which may contribute to health education.
  • Provide consultation and guidance to groups and individuals in developing and improving their health education activities.
  • Participate in community wide collaborative initiatives relating to public health and safety.
  • Contribute to the improvement in the quality of health education of school children and beyond.
  • Provide answers to inquiries and to supply materials and references in answer to requests.
  • To prepare, select and distribute health education materials.
  • Assure that there is a continuing appraisal of health educational methods and materials.
  • Assist in preparation of annual reports.
  • Mandatory participation in orientation and training for basic public health emergency preparedness and response concepts.
  • Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED :

Work is performed under the supervision of the Health Department Director of Health Education and Planning.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES :

May direct the activities of clerical support staff and Health Education student interns.

EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, EDUCATION :

  • Minimum Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in Public Health / Health Education, Communications, Public Relations, or related field.
  • A minimum of (2) years experience in performing public health education work.
  • Preferred : Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) or MCHES.
  • Strong marketing, design and creativity skills.
  • Creating brochures, flyers, newsletters, displays, web and social media messaging, using sgraphics software
  • Strong public speaking and presentations skills.
  • Experience participating in community coalitions or workgroups.
  • Considerable knowledge on developing publications / materials.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of public health education and planning, including methods of administration, community organization and interagency relations, various techniques used in health instruction and the appraisal and evaluation of the public health education.
  • Considerable knowledge of school health programs, including health examinations and individual health guidance, communicable disease control, arrangement and content of school programs and instruction and evaluation of the program.
  • Considerable knowledge of public and personal health including personal hygiene, public health administration, communicable and non-communicable diseases, environmental health, vital statistics, maternal / child / adolescent health and community / worksite health promotion, substance use disorder prevention and community coalition experience.
  • Considerable knowledge of current social and economic disparities pertaining to public health.
  • Ability to collect and interpret demographic and bio-statistical data.
  • Basic knowledge of the principles of community health assessment.
  • Writing, reading, mathematical principles; proficient computer skills-Microsoft Office Suite, Outlook; exercise sound judgement and decision making in accordance with policies and procedures; ability to research and problem solve independently; knowledge of County operations and functions; ability to prioritize and time manage; handle stressful situations, provide effective and friendly customer service; support the County's mission and values; ability to think critically where necessary.
  • Knowledge or understanding of basic administrative tasks : operate standard office equipment; document management; prepare and maintain records, various correspondences and reports; answer general inquiries and refer as necessary; answer telephone calls, process mail, order supplies / equipment; prepare meeting agendas, attend meetings, record / transcribe / distribute minutes; entering, transcribing, recording, storing or maintaining information in written or electronic form with speed and accuracy; maintain calendars, arrange meetings, schedule rooms and equipment as necessary.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and efficiently with management, co-workers and clients; obtain and communicate accurate information; apply common sense understanding to complex instructions and respond accordingly; communicate complex ideas through graphs, charts, presentations, reports or other professional correspondence.

  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction
  • Proficient skills using Microsoft Office programs including, but not limited to : Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook required. Proficiency may be tested.
