About the Position :
Under the general supervision of the assigned supervisory or management personnel provides leadership to subordinate shop personnel in the skilled maintenance and repair of Tehama County Fire Emergency vehicles, including troubleshooting, maintaining, repairing, and overhauling heavy and light emergency vehicles and equipment; operates and maintains a variety of hand, power, and shop tools.
- Inspects, evaluates, and tests equipment and vehicles; estimates time and material requirements; reads and interprets shop manuals and specifications; reviews and monitors completed work to ensure quality control standards are met.
- Performs and provides leadership to subordinate shop personnel in the maintenance and repair of County light and heavy fire apparatuses and related equipment.
- Performs difficult, technical, and complex equipment repairs and maintenance tasks, including locating and diagnosing complex mechanical defects.

Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade supplemented by college-level coursework in the automotive maintenance and repair field.
- Four (4) years of work in automotive, heavy equipment and/or emergency equipment maintenance and repair. Lead-level experience is preferred.
- Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.
License and Special Requirements:
- Requires incumbent to provide own set of basic mechanic tools.
- Must possess a valid California Class C driver’s license and must obtain a valid California Class B driver’s license with certifications in tank combination/bulk liquid load, air brakes and manual transmission within six (6) months of hire.
- Must obtain certification by the State Fire Marshal’s Office for fire pumps and accessories within two (2) years of hire.
- Must obtain brake certification within two (2) years of hire.
The department is currently recruiting for one (1) vacancy.
In addition, Tehama County is establishing an eligibility list to fill future vacancies for a Public Safety Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic III - Fire, as well as subsequent vacancies which occur during the life of the eligibility list.
New employees should anticipate being hired at the beginning step of the salary range. Candidates who exceed entry level qualifications may be considered, with approval from the Board of Supervisors, for placement at other than A step.
