Under general supervision, to perform a variety of technical sub-professional or paraprofessional environmental health inspections and tasks related to the enforcement of laws and regulations; and to do related work, as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Management reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.Performs follow-up inspections of restaurants, markets, bakeries, and other food establishments to determine compliance with initial inspections conducted by a Registered Environmental Health SpecialistInvestigates the more routine complaints and conducts follow-up inspections, if needed, in the areas of housing, vector control, public nuisances, noise abatement, water quality and sewage systemsCollects water samples from public water systems and private wells for testing laboratories; Performs final inspections for sewage disposal system permitsSets up and maintains file systems and records relating to environmental health programs and functionsPerforms ongoing inspection of records and monitoring instruments of underground storage tanks, and other routine hazardous materials inspections.May advise the public on a variety of environmental health regulationsPerforms a full range of clerical support functions which includes relieving the administrative support staffMonitors emergency response incidents and cleanup Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDSSit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; crawl through various areas on hands and knees; stand, walk or crouch on narrow and slippery surfaces; climb ladders, stairs, steep sloped terrain and scaffolding; ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 25 lbs.; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment, including computer, telephone, calculator, copiers, and FAX; use of chemical, gas, and radioactive detection equipment, thermometers, measuring tools and devices, GPS devices, chlorine and PH spectrophotometer, and other applicable environmental monitoring and sampling devices. ENVIRONMENTAL ELEMENTS: Work is usually performed in an office, outdoor, and driving in inclement weather and mountain roads for extended periods of time; some work is performed in varying temperatures and humidity; exposure to high levels of noise; some exposure to dust; exposure to hazardous waste and materials; continuous contact with other staff and the public.Salary: Environmental Health Technician I: $3182.31 - $4264.60 per monthEnvironmental Health Technician II: $3515.25 - $4710.77 per monthDISASTER SERVICE WORKERIn addition to our everyday duties, we have an added responsibility to help in a declared disaster. Under California law, all public employees are Disaster Service Workers and may be called upon in the event of a disaster.
