The Pierson Librarian I / II serves as the branch manager of a small community branch. This position is responsible for the supervision of two staff members, along with program planning for all ages, collection maintenance, and customer service. The branch is open 5 days per week.

Librarian I

Front-line, entry-level professional work in specialized areas of a regional or full-service library or independent work operating a small community branch. Having met the minimum requirements, the preferred candidate will be bilingual, will have at least one (1) year of experience working with children and teens, and will have at least one (1) year of independent, managerial experience.

Librarian II

Front-line professional work in Adult Services, Youth Services, Teen Services, or Circulation areas of a regional or full-service library or independent work operating a small community branch or work cataloging at the Library Support Center. Having met the minimum requirements, the preferred candidate will be bilingual, will have at least one (1) year of experience working with children and teens, and will have at least one (1) year of independent, managerial experience.

PLEASE NOTE, CANDIDATES :

  • Must be able to work nights and weekends.
  • If applicable, must attach a copy of Master's degree / transcript in Library Science (MLS) from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited program.

Must obtain a valid Florida driver’s license within 30 days of hire and maintain thereafter.

Librarian I Responsibilities

  • Creates excellent customer experiences by providing an inviting atmosphere for library users.
  • Maintains good internal communications and strong working relationships with colleagues and supervisors.
  • May train, supervise, schedule, and review the performance of subordinate staff, student workers, and / or volunteers.
  • Supports, plans, promotes, and executes in-house or virtual programs and / or outreach events.
  • Provides prompt, courteous assistance to library users.
  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory for library users.
  • Keeps abreast of new materials and encourages the use of materials and services.
  • Instructs community members on library resources and technology.
  • Answers basic to complex computer and e-reader questions.
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
  • Supports and upholds county and library policies.
  • Assists with overseeing the processing, maintenance, and arrangement of collections.
  • Explains or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files and databases.
  • Supports the day-to-day operation of an assigned section or branch.
  • Promotes print and computer literacy.
  • Uses the integrated library system and online databases.
  • May be responsible for reserving and managing the branch’s meeting room spaces.
  • May perform independent work related to the overall operation of a community branch.
  • May be responsible for daily and / or weekly money deposits.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Attends work regularly and consistently.
  • Attends workshops, webinars, seminars, and conferences as required.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based on operational needs.
  • Performs work of all lower-level library classifications and other duties as assigned.
  • Librarian II Responsibilities

  • Serves as a person-in-charge during assigned shifts.
  • Manages safety, security, and emergency building issues during assigned shifts.
  • May direct and supervise on-site vendors during assigned shifts.
  • Promotes and educates community members about library services.
  • Serves and contributes to assigned library teams.

  • May supervise classes and programs in a dedicated makerspace.
  • May be responsible for the selection and acquisition of collection materials.

  • Provides reference and reader’s advisory for library users.
  • Keeps abreast of new materials and encourages the use of materials.
  • Instructs community members on library resources and technology.
  • Answers basic to complex computer and e-reader questions.
  • Furnishes information on library activities, facilities, rules, and services.
  • Supports and upholds county and library policies.
  • Assists with overseeing the processing, maintenance, and arrangement of collections.
  • Explains or demonstrates procedures for searching catalog files and databases.

  • Participates with the development and maintenance of library collections.
  • May perform independent work related to the overall operation of a community branch.
  • May perform original cataloging and supervise processing duties.
  • May be responsible for daily and / or weekly money deposits.
  • Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
  • Responds to emergency situations.
  • Attends work regularly and consistently.
  • Attends workshops, webinars, seminars, and conferences as required.
  • May be assigned to other county locations based on operational needs.
  • Performs work of all lower-level library classifications and other duties as assigned.
  • Minimum Requirements

    Librarian I : Pay Range : $23.20

    Master's Degree in Library Science from ALA accredited program or a Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science, Education, Humanities, Social Science, or related field with one year of experience and training directly related to the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

    Librarian II : Pay Range : $24.49

    Master's Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program or one (1) year of professional library experience at the Librarian I classification.

    ADA Requirements

    Physical Demands : Ability to hear, listen, talk; visual acuity necessary to operate a motorized vehicle, finger dexterity, may require visual acuity to read fine print. Ability to lift and carry 25 pounds, bend, reach, kneel, crouch, stretch, twist, and climb. Ability to stand for long periods.

    Mental Demands : Ability to read and comprehend professional and technical manuals, procedures, and journals; memos, policies, safety instructions, etc. Ability to speak clearly and concisely. Ability to relate information verbally and in writing. Ability to perform basic mathematical and monetary functions.
