What are the responsibilities and job description for the Legal Intern 2025- County Attorney's Office position at County of Volusia?
The Volusia County Attorney's Internship Program is an internship designed to expose law school students to a career in the legal field and local government. The goal of the program is to educate students on the many facets of the County Attorney's Office and its representation of local government. This program will allow law students to learn the vital role that the legal department provides to include advising officials, advisory boards, employees, and representing the County in local government matters. Law school students may apply to participate in a paid internship for the summer of 2025. The paid program allows law school students to earn an hourly wage with a structured work schedule. A commitment of at least 10-12 weeks is required.
The Legal Intern will rotate and shadow different legal areas within the County Attorney's office to include litigation, contracts, real estate, public procurement, labor, employment, or election law.

- Internships are not available for students who have completed their college education.
- Must have completed their first year of law school and be enrolled in an accredited law school.
- Shadow different legal areas within the County Attorney's office to include litigation, contracts, real estate, public procurement, labor, employment, or election law.
- May advise officials, advisory boards, employees, and representing the County in local government matters.
- Researches and analyzes law sources (i.e., ordinances, statutes, recorded judicial decisions, legal articles).
- May review contracts, agreements, and other legal documents.
- May proofread and review ordinances and resolutions.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Currently enrolled in a Juris Doctorate program at an accredited law school and has completed the first year of law school.
- Internships are not available for students who have completed their college education.
- Strong legal academic record, as well as practical skills that will help them succeed in their roles.
- Interest in learning about local government law.
- At least 18 years of age.
- Be enrolled in an accredited college or university as a:
- Full-Time Graduate Student (Fall/Spring - 9 Credit Hours; Summer - 6 Credit Hours).
- Be able to work 40 hours per week, Monday-Friday 8:00AM-5:00PM for twelve (12) weeks
- Must possess a valid driver's license at the time of hire.
- Knowledge of judicial procedures.
- Knowledge of State statutory and State and Federal constitutional law, and their application to County operations and ordinances.
- Ability to learn the organization, functions, and authority of the various County departments.
- Ability to represent the interests of the County departments/groups in drafting legislation and legal documents.
- Ability to conduct thorough and accurate legal research using various resources, such as case law, statutes, and regulations to analyze cases for their value as legal precedent.
- Ability to analyze complex legal issues and communicate their findings clearly and concisely.
- Ability to communicate effectively with County administrative officials, employees, court officials, attorneys, and the public.
- Ability to manage their time effectively, as they may have multiple tasks and deadlines to juggle.
- Ability to work under stressful conditions.
- Ability to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.
ADA REQUIREMENTS:
Physical Demands: Sedentary work. Ability to lift, pull and push up to 10 lbs. Ability to see, talk; finger dexterity. Major visual functions are acuity, far and near, field of vision, and accommodation. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.
Environmental Demands: Inside work.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend legal documents, statutes, ordinances; technical and professional journals and manuals, abstracts, and financial reports. Ability to write legal documents, business letters, summaries, opinions, etc. using prescribed formats. Ability to speak clearly and concisely relating information, details, and procedures to layman; persuasive/extemporaneous speaking; ability to speak in public. Ability to perform basic mathematical functions.
