Supervisor II – Corrections Laundry

Volusia County is seeking an Inmate Work Crew Supervisor for the Corrections Division. This position will be responsible for supervising and coordinating inmate work crews in varying degrees of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled labor at various locations throughout Volusia County. 

Selected applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation including criminal, financial, education, and employment history.

• Performs work found in the Supervisor I classification.
• Operates equipment and/or machinery and oversees routine preventative maintenance service.
• Coordinates and schedules labor and equipment with corrections staff as well as other entities. 
• Evaluates, rates, and counsels inmates on performance.
• Depending on operational need, will be assigned to supervise and train inmate work crews for various tasks such as but not limited to Landscaping, Gardening, Construction, Laundry services, sewing, and/or general maintenance type items.
• Creates various reports daily, this would include performance reports, inventory tracking, and incident reports if issues arise. 

• May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
• Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
• Must adhere to Federal, State, County and Local ordinances.
• Responds to emergency situations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Graduation from high school or possession of a GED and two (2) years of general construction and/or maintenance experience, of which one (1) year is at the supervisory level; or three (3) years of experience at a Supervisory level. 

A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License at time of hire.

• Knowledge of materials and methods commonly used in the activities of the specific job function.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and the standard safety precautions of construction/maintenance activities.

• Skilled in the use of various equipment and machinery related to the work and in the operation and maintenance of assigned equipment.
• Ability to perform basic computer skills.
• Ability to lay out and direct the work of one or more inmate work crews.
• Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to groups and individuals.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations.

• Must be able to relocate to other county locations based upon operational needs.

Mental Demands: Ability to read safety instructions, memos, letters, product directions, work orders, layouts. Ability to write at a level to relay information, data, details to others via procedures, memos, reports, and directions. Ability to perform shop math. Ability to speak clearly and concisely relaying information to inmates and others.

Physical Demands: Ability to lift (50 pounds), carry, reach, see, talk, handle, feel, push, pull, twist. Major visual functions are acuity, far and near, field of vision and accommodation. Visual acuity (peripheral vision and depth perception) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle.

Environmental Demands: Inside and outside work. Ability to tolerate inclement weather including rain, humidity, heat and cold and lightning. May be exposed to chemicals, insects, snakes, wildlife, toxic plants, odors, dust, fumes, noise, vibration saltwater, salt air, mud, dust, confined spaces and poor ventilation.
