Major Functions
The County of Volusia is seeking an experienced Tree Specialist for the tree crew with the Road and Bridge Division. This position may be assigned to the east or west side of the County and will be responsible for cutting down, pruning, or trimming branches, leaves, and roots from trees to prevent damage and destruction or for aesthetical purposes. Candidate must have experience operating bucket trucks, stump grinders, chainsaws and chippers.
NOTE: This position requires the ability to work at elevated heights. The position also requires the availability to work after hours and be on call.

Education and Experience
High School diploma or possession of GED and two (2) years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of tree trimming and removal equipment (e.g., chainsaw, bucket truck, prentice loader, front end loader, and tandem truck).
OR
Completion of the eighth (8th) grade and six (6) years of experience in the operation and routine maintenance of tree trimming and removal equipment (e.g., chainsaw, bucket truck, prentice loader, front end loader, and tandem truck).
A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum experience.
License(s)
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license at time of hire.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida CDL Class B license or higher at time of hire.
Possession of a valid Florida Department of Transportation Temporary Traffic Control Intermediate certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter.
Must obtain and maintain an OSHA approved Bucket Truck Operator certification within six (6) months of hire and recertify every three (3) years.
Must obtain Chainsaw Operator training certification within six (6) months of hire and maintain thereafter.
NOTE:A pre-employment skills test may be required.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Physical Demands: Heavy work. Ability to push, pull and lift up to 75 lbs. Ability to pull, reach, climb, sit, see, hear, turn (neck, body), handle. Visual acuity (peripheral vision, depth perception and field of vision) necessary to operate a motorized vehicle. Ability to traverse uneven, wet, and/or broken terrain. Ability to work at considerable heights and in tight spaces, lift, straddle, bend, and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity while using hand and power tools.
Environmental Demands:(Demands may change depending on division/service center and equipment of assignment.) Outside work. Exposure to inclement weather (heat, humidity, cold, rain), fumes, odors, noise, vibration, dust, poor ventilation.
Mental Demands: Ability to read and comprehend operational and safety instructions, procedures, rules, policies, warnings, memos. Ability to write simple sentences relaying information, data, and details. Ability to perform basic math.

- Maintains trees within County Rights-of-Way for public safety by performing tree pruning and tree removal functions; remove dead and damaged limbs and trees utilizing all required personal protective gear.
- Operates trucks with gross weight over 8,000 pounds, including dump, flatbed, and chipper truck.
- Operates bucket truck and trims trees from bucket.
- Operates and maintains tree-trimming equipment, including chain saws, pole saws, stump grinder, prentice loader, and brush chipper.
- Uses rope, harness, and other gear to safely trim, prune, and remove trees.
- Cleans work area by raking, sweeping, and using a blower to remove all debris.
- Sets flags, barricades, and signs for maintenance of traffic.
- Performs routine field lubrication of light, medium, and heavy rolling stock and equipment.
- Performs daily safety inspections of assigned equipment prior to and after use.
- Performs routine service and maintenance.
- Participates generally in the laboring work of the crew as workload demands.
- Attends work on a regular and consistent basis.
- Must adhere to Federal, State, County, and Local ordinances.
- May be assigned to other county locations based upon operational needs.
- Responds to emergency situations.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Knowledge of traffic laws and other regulations governing the operation of equipment.
