The County of Yolo is recruiting to fill two (2) regular, full-time positions in the class of Deputy Sheriff at the Yolo County Sheriffs Office.  This assignment will be to patrol an assigned area and enforce State and local laws; to receive and serve civil processes and subpoenas; to supervise inmates in the jail facility; to perform duties as a courtroom bailiff; and to perform other related duties as required.

Prior sworn safety experience with a law enforcement agency shall be credited towards years of County service solely for the purpose of calculating longevity.


In addition to the salary posted in this job bulletin, employees receive additional compensation, up to a total of 15% of base, by stacking a maximum of two of the following incentives:

  • 2.5% for possession of Intermediate POST   
  • 7.5% for possession of Advanced POST   
  • 2.5% for possession of a 2 year degree   
  • 7.5% for possession of a 4 year degree
  • 10% for possession of post graduate degree

Employment will be contingent upon proof of P.O.S.T Basic Certification after completion of Academy training.  A copy of California P.O.S.T Basic certification OR verification of current P.O.S.T Basic Academy enrollment should be attached to the employment application.

  • Patrols assigned area using patrol car and two-way radio unit;
  • Answers calls for the protection of life and property and the enforcement of State and local laws;
  • Observes assigned area for suspicious acts and unsafe conditions;
  • Conducts preliminary investigations at scenes of accidents and crimes;
  • Prepares detailed reports of all activities;
  • Provides assistance to other Deputies and other law enforcement agencies as necessary;
  • Receives and serves a variety of civil papers including summons and complaints, subpoenas, orders, writs of attachment, executions, and claim and delivery;
  • Confers with appropriate parties in serving civil processes;
  • Makes arrests in contempt proceeding;
  • Effects evictions and seizes personal property ties;
  • Serves as jailer;
  • Serves as bailiff;
  • Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Education:  Graduation from high school or possession of a GED.

Certificate:  Possession of a valid POST Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training.
 
 In addition to the above, applicants must:
1.  Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment;
2.  Be legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law 
3.  Successfully pass a thorough background investigation conducted by the Sheriff's Department;
4.  Not have been convicted of a felony; and
5.  Be in good physical condition and pass a thorough medical and psychological examination prior to employment.
 
Special Requirements: Persons employed in this class must be willing to work odd, irregular, and/or rotating shifts, holidays and weekends.  In addition, incumbents must continue to maintain department standards for firearms qualification and training as a condition of employment. Each deputy must continue to meet the department standards on firearms qualifications. 
 
License: Positions in this classification require incumbents to possess and maintain a valid California driver's license, Class C or higher, to carry out job related duties. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical or mental disability may request a reasonable accommodation.
 
Ability to:  Ability to learn, understand, interpret, and apply departmental policies, and rules and laws and ordinances pertaining to law enforcement work; ability to write clear, comprehensive reports and accurately remember names, faces, numbers, and events; ability to learn the use and care of firearms; ability to exercise care in proper driving of a departmental vehicle; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others and adopt quick, effective, and reasonable courses of action under emergency conditions.

  • Conditional Job Offer, pending:
    • Psychological Exam
    • Medical Exam

 Verification of Licensure
Acceptable forms of licensure, certification and/or formal training documentation are certificates that list the applicant's name, institution name, course title and date the certificate was awarded. If applicable, the verifying documentation should include a certification/license number as well as an expiration date.
