PURPOSE STATEMENT:
Substitute Teachers/ Emergency Substitutes are on an on-call/substitute basis, this position will perform related duties of a teacher to provide continuity in the day-to-day responsibilities during the absence of the regular teacher.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Completed Employment Application

- Hold a valid Washington State Teaching Certificate or Emergency Substitute Certificate
- Pass a Washington State Patrol & FBI fingerprint background check. (Estimated fee is $80, applicant paid)
- Complete the Required SafeSchools/Vector Training courses (non-paid)
- Valid Driver's License or photo identification
- Social Security Card
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Manage classroom and provide instruction according to lesson plans as prepared by the classroom teacher.
- Provide classroom environment which promotes active learning.
- Assist the teacher with all aspects of the daily routine, including distributing and collecting supplies, keeping attendance records, lunchroom duty, recess, etc.
- Work with students to help reinforce learning objectives.
- Adhere to all Coupeville Schools board policies and procedures.
- Use appropriate judgment to act in the best interest of students at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality.
- Observe and utilize reasonable and professional medical/safety precautions to include positioning children in a safe and secure manner
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The daily work is normally performed in a classroom setting and is performed primarily indoors with some requirements for outdoor supervision and activities. The individual is required to frequently stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, and crouch. There is occasionally reaching, lifting, and carrying of up to 20 pounds.

Fingerprint records and background checks are required by Washington state law. The background record check consists of a check through the Washington State Patrol (WSP) and Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI). (RCW 28A.410.010). WSP/FBI sends the results of fingerprint record checks to OSPI . The results reside in a secure database with OSPI that is designated for staff from public schools, colleges, and universities, Washington's school for the deaf and school for the blind, private schools, as well as certification programs, can access online.
You must have cleared fingerprint results from the Washington State Patrol and the FBI before working with students. The quickest results are received with the electronic fingerprinting available at the ESD189 in Anacortes. The cost of fingerprinting is $80.00 (estimate). Fingerprint results are valid for two years at any public school in the State of Washington.
