General Description: The school nurse coordinates, implements, and delivers student health care services, as defined in the specific responsibilities and duties. The scope of practice is defined by law and regulation and professional school nursing standards.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist in identification of students with significant health problems and develop individualized health care plans and emergency care plans for these students; train unlicensed staff in the care of students with these plans.
- Assess physical and emotional health of students within the scope of the school nurse practice and initiate referrals for further diagnosis and treatment; with parent and/or student consent, communicate health concerns that may impact learning to appropriate staff.
- Delegate and provide training and supervision of non-nurse staff or volunteers in the provision of nursing services and procedures, and administration of medication, allowed by law to be delegated.
- Interpret medical records for staff to assist in determining educational placement and services.
- Participate as needed in multidisciplinary team meetings for students with significant health problems.
- Participate in data collection as related to health care records, and maintain accurate records in areas of responsibility.
- Assist with coordination and oversight of health screening programs for the district, including referral and follow-up.
- Manage compliance with state immunization requirements.
- Provide emergency services, if needed, when on site.
- Support School-Based Administrative Match program by identifying students in need of medical services, providing information to students and families, and making referrals for services.
- Perform other health-related duties as assigned by the superintendent.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Valid Washington State registered nurse (RN) certification or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
- valid Washington State driver's license and access to personal transportation;
- experience as a school nurse or completion of training in this field.
- ability to use Macintosh computers and other technological tools to assist with work completion;
- maintain current First Aid and CPR certification;
- a helpful, calm, friendly, and polite manner when interacting with students, parents, other health providers, and district staff;
- the ability to make reasoned decisions, exhibit mature judgment, responsibility and dependability;
- exemplify good personal health practices and mental health attitudes;
- excellent communication skills, in writing and orally;
- ability to interpret students' health needs to parents and school staff;
- ability to effectively plan, organize, conduct, and supervise work assignments, and to work collaboratively with administration and staff,
- appropriate discretion concerning students, staff, and confidential or privileged information.
Working Conditions:
- Works in the health rooms at each school, frequently using a computer.
- Walks within the school in routine job functions, and periodically walks or drives to other schools in the district.
- Bends, twists, and lifts up to 20 pounds when accessing records and office supplies.
- Occasionally exposed to high decibel alarm systems during drills or an actual emergency.
- Routinely exposed to blood and sharps; required to clean and bandage wounds.
- Required to monitor and administer prescribed medication to students.
- Uses a telephone to communicate.
