Job Overview :
The Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist (MHRS) at a California Short-Term Residential Therapeutic Program (STRTP) serving adolescents plays a critical role in providing specialized mental health services to clients in need. Working within the framework of Medi-Cal specialty mental health services and adhering to the scope of practice requirements, the MHRS supports adolescents in their journey towards mental wellness and rehabilitation. This position requires a deep understanding of adolescent mental health, trauma-informed care, and evidence-based interventions.
Under the supervision of the clinical supervisor, Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist (MHRS) will engage adolescent clients in activities to educate, teach, coach, or assist with a skill needed by the client to manage mental health symptoms and behaviors. MHRSs provide strength-based support and leadership in restoring, improving, and/or preserving a client's functional, social, communication, or daily living skills to enhance self-sufficiency or self-regulation in multiple life domains relevant to the developmental stage and needs of the client. Rehabilitation also includes support resources, and/or medication education.
Services may include any or all of the following:
- Assistance in restoring or maintaining a client’s:
o functional skills
o daily living skills
o social skills
o grooming skills
o personal hygiene skills
- Teaching, coaching, practicing, role playing, planning and organizing
- Accessing support services
- Providing the actual services of training/assisting the client in techniques to address his/her mental health symptoms and behaviors which prevent optimal functioning
Responsibilities :
- Develop individualized behavior/support plans in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, incorporating Medi-Cal guidelines and client-centered approaches.
- Stay abreast of developments in the field of adolescent mental health, Medi-Cal regulations, and best practices in trauma-informed care through ongoing training and professional development.
- Uphold ethical standards and confidentiality in all interactions with clients, families, and colleagues.
- Implement social-emotional and behaviorally-based interventions aimed at addressing mental health symptoms and challenges.
- Provide individual and group rehabilitation sessions and coaching tailored to the unique needs of adolescents, fostering emotional regulation, coping skills, and resilience.
- Collaborate with external providers, probation officers, social workers, and other stakeholders to ensure continuity of care and holistic support for clients.
- Conduct psychoeducation sessions for adolescents and their families, empowering them with knowledge about mental health, coping strategies, and community resources.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of client progress, plans, and interventions in compliance with Medi-Cal requirements and agency policies.
- Participate in case conferences, multidisciplinary team meetings, and clinical supervision sessions to review cases, share insights, and enhance skills. Required Supervision: MHRSs must receive ongoing oversight which may be satisfied through individual or group supervision provided by the organization.
Required Skills:
- Demonstrated ability to develop and implement individualized behavior support plans based on assessment findings, Medi-Cal guidelines, and client preferences.
- Strong skills in delivering interventions for adolescents, including trauma-informed approaches.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to establish rapport with adolescents from diverse backgrounds and communicate effectively with interdisciplinary team members and external stakeholders.
- Capacity to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating flexibility, adaptability, and resilience in responding to the evolving needs of clients and the program.
- Proficiency in maintaining accurate and organized documentation, adhering to Medi-Cal requirements and agency protocols.

- Ability to prioritize tasks, manage time effectively, and maintain professionalism under pressure.
- Strong ethical principles and adherence to professional codes of conduct and confidentiality.
Experience /Qualifications:
- Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist (MHRS) is an individual who meets one of the following requirements:
- An Associate’s degree in the field of psychology or closely related field and six years of experience in a mental health setting as a specialist.
- Two years of the experience must have been accrued after obtaining the Associate’s degree.
- Two years of post‐associate arts clinical experience requires a sequence where first, an Associate degree is obtained and second, clinical experience is obtained.
- A Baccalaureate degree in the field of psychology or closely related field and four years of experience in a mental health setting.
- A Master’s degree in the field of psychology or closely related field and two years of experience in a mental health setting.
- MHRSs must possess a NPI number with a valid taxonomy (can be obtained upon hire).
- Knowledge of Medi-Cal specialty mental health services, documentation requirements, and billing procedures preferred.
- Familiarity with trauma-informed care principles, evidence-based interventions for adolescent mental health disorders, and crisis intervention techniques.
- Ability to pass background checks, including fingerprinting and clearance.
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation for occasional travel to meetings, trainings, or client-related activities.
