Summary

The Clinical Operations Supervisor provides oversight of pharmacy practice programs, medication use systems, and quality initiatives to detect, mitigate, and prevent medication adverse events and work to ensure medication use is aligned with evidence-based best practices and regulatory standards. They also work with interdisciplinary programs to deliver medication therapy management within patient care services and to ensure pharmaceutical care programs are appropriately integrated throughout the institution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • General Medical Practice: Demonstrate competence and knowledge in clinical tasks, · Prepares and dispenses medication orders per physician requests, adhering to established policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Accurately interprets and transcribes or verifies medication orders (verbal, written, and computerized) to computerized medication profiles.
  • Safely and accurately prepares and dispenses medications, including sterile, chemotherapy, and parenteral nutrition preparations, using appropriate techniques.
  • Issues controlled substances to patient care areas and maintains required records.
  • Monitors medication therapy regimens for contraindications, interactions (drug-drug, drug-food, drug-laboratory test), allergies, dosage appropriateness, and therapeutic duplication.
  • Assists with pharmacokinetic consultations and drug dosing per organizational protocols.
  • Reviews culture and susceptibility data for antibiotic appropriateness and recommends changes as necessary.
  • Accurately reads, extracts, and interprets information from patient medical records.
  • Detects and reports suspected adverse drug reactions and medication errors promptly.
  • Supports the formulary by minimizing non-formulary procurements, utilizing therapeutic substitution protocols, and promoting rational medication therapy selection.
  • Provides clinical consultations and clarification to practitioners, recommending evidence-based medication therapy regimens and monitoring plans, as well as cost-effective therapeutic alternatives.
  • Provides accurate and timely drug information to professional staff and patients/families upon request.
  • Documents all clinical activities and interventions accurately.
  • Participates in quality improvement and medication-use review activities, including data collection, conducting quality monitors and inspections, and maintaining logs and records.
  • Participates in the education of healthcare practitioners.
  • Provides on-call support for emergencies after evening shifts.
  • Supervises and directs pharmacy support personnel, verifying the daily activities of pharmacy technicians.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision, organizing and prioritizing work assignments to ensure timely pharmacy services.
  • Answers telephone calls and requests at the window, directing them appropriately.
  • Maintains a clean, neat, and well-organized pharmacy area and equipment.
  • Performs essential duties of the pharmacy director in their absence.
  • Attends pharmacy staff meetings, orientation, education, and training programs.
  • Reviews literature and other materials relevant to pharmacy practice.
  • Completes all competence and skills assessment requirements.
  • Provides oversight of specialty pharmacy services and clinical operations.
  • Attends and participates in relevant meetings/councils (Infection Control, Antimicrobial Stewardship, etc.).
  • Engages in education and workflow implementation, including new hire orientation and assisting/leading new pharmacy department processes.
  • Assumes responsibility of pharmacist lead when the pharmacy director is unavailable, including overnight call responsibilities and managing pharmacy operations.
  • Maintains all required competencies and completes annual compliance courses on time.
  • Supports and promotes the mission and values of Covenant Health Ministry.
  • Other duties as consistent with this role.

 

Job Requirements

Job Knowledge and Skills

  • Must read, write, speak, and comprehend the English language.
  • Effective use of telephone skills.
  • Manage patient emotions and self-emotions such as fear, anger, hostility and violence.
  • Work alone or with a team and in crowded/confined spaces.
  • Thorough knowledge of drugs and drug therapy.

 

Education and Experience

  • 5-6 years of college of Pharmacy, B.S. in Pharmacy or PharmD, 1500 hours of pharmacy internship.
  • Graduate Degree, License / Certification, minimum 3 years of on-the-job pharmacist experience.
  • Active State Licensure, mandatory
  • Approved continuing education, 15 hours per year. 6-12 months hospital pharmacy.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Must possess the physical and mental abilities to perform the tasks normally associated with this position that involve a combination of sitting, standing, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, and reaching. Lifting/carrying frequently up to 35 pounds, and occasionally up to 50 pounds. Some stress is related to a high level of responsibility for quality care. The ability to speak, read, write, and understand written instructions in English is required.
