PRIMARY FUNCTION : In keeping with the Mission Statement and Principles of Covenant House, the Transport Technician (Donations & Pickups) is responsible for managing the transportation of donations, supplies, and other goods to and from the shelter. This includes picking up donations from community partners, local businesses, or individuals, delivering goods to the shelter, and ensuring the safe handling and storage of items. The role involves driving shelter vehicles, maintaining the vehicles, and working closely with shelter staff and donors to ensure the efficient and timely collection and distribution of resources for the youth and families served by the shelter.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities :
Key Responsibilities :
1. Donation Pickup & Delivery :
Safely operate shelter vehicles to pick up donations from various locations (e.g., businesses, churches, community centers, and private donors) as scheduled.Transport donations to the shelter, ensuring that all items are handled with care and stored appropriately.Coordinate with shelter staff to ensure timely delivery of supplies, including food, clothing, hygiene items, furniture, and other essentials.Maintain a record of donations picked up, including the quantity and type of goods, and ensure that all donations are documented properly.2. Vehicle Maintenance and Safety :
Conduct regular inspections of the shelter’s transport vehicles to ensure they are in good working order and report any issues promptly to the Maintenance Manager.Ensure that the vehicle is cleaned, fueled, and stocked with necessary equipment (e.g., tie-downs, safety gear, first aid kits) for safe transport.Adhere to all safety regulations, including the proper handling of fragile items, as well as ensuring the safety of any other passengers (if applicable) during transport.3. Inventory Management and Coordination :
Assist in the unloading, sorting, and organizing of donated items upon arrival at the shelter.Collaborate with shelter staff to ensure donations are stored correctly and used efficiently for youth and family programs.Help manage and track donations to ensure that inventory levels are maintained and updated, and ensure any overstock is properly stored or distributed.4. Safety & Compliance :
Ensure that all transportation of donations complies with local and state regulations, including safety guidelines and insurance requirements.Follow shelter protocols for handling donations that may require special care, such as perishable goods or sensitive materials.Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations when transporting food or hygiene products, and follow any specific guidelines for hazardous or non-perishable goods.5. Community Relations :
Maintain positive, professional relationships with donors, community partners, and businesses to encourage ongoing support for the shelter.Represent the shelter positively during pickups, fostering goodwill and reinforcing the mission of the organization.Communicate effectively with donors about the type of items needed and coordinate pick-up times that work for both parties.6. Documentation & Reporting :
Maintain accurate records of donations and pickups, including donor information, donation details (e.g., type and quantity of items), and the date of pickup.Provide regular reports to the Shelter Manager or Operations Coordinator on the status of donations, including any issues or needs related to transportation or inventory.Report any accidents, damages, or issues that arise during transportation of goods promptly.7. Collaboration with Shelter Staff :
Work closely with shelter staff to coordinate the storage and distribution of donations to residents, ensuring that donated items meet the needs of the youth and families.Assist in organizing and facilitating donation drives or special events (e.g., holiday drives, back-to-school events) as needed.Communicate with shelter staff regarding special transportation needs or additional pickups that may arise on short notice.8. Logistical Support :
Occasionally assist with the transportation of shelter supplies, food deliveries, or other logistics, as needed.Assist in the preparation of large items or bulk donations for transport, ensuring items are packed securely and safely.Coordinate with other staff members to ensure timely collection and distribution of goods for special programs or events.Qualifications :
Education & Experience :
High school diploma or equivalent required.Experience in transportation, logistics, or working in a non-profit setting is a plus.Previous experience driving large vehicles or delivery trucks is preferred.Experience handling donations and working with community partners is a plus.Skills & Abilities :
Strong driving skills with a clean driving record (valid driver’s license required).Knowledge of basic vehicle maintenance and the ability to perform minor troubleshooting or maintenance tasks.Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.Excellent communication skills and ability to interact professionally with donors, staff, and community members.Ability to work independently and as part of a team.Empathy and respect for the youth and families served by the shelter, understanding the sensitivity around donations and resources.Physical Requirements :
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs (e.g., boxes, furniture, food supplies).Ability to bend, squat, and maneuver heavy items during pickups and deliveries.Ability to spend extended periods of time driving or performing physical tasks.Working Conditions :
Full-time position with flexible hours depending on donation schedules (may include evenings and weekends).Work involves both indoor and outdoor environments, with occasional exposure to adverse weather conditions.Occasional heavy lifting and physical work is required.Why Join Us :

About Covenant House Texas :
Covenant House Texas (CHT) opened its doors in 1983 to provide shelter for homeless, abused and abandoned youth ages 18 – 24. After more than 35 years of service, CHT offers an extensive continuum of care model for homeless youth including mental health and substance abuse counseling, educational and vocational training, transitional and permanent living programs, street outreach and prevention, pastoral ministry and parenting classes in addition to providing the basic necessities of food, clothing, medical care and safe shelter from the streets for youth in crisis.
