General Definition of Work

Performs protective service work processing inmates, maintaining correctional facility security on a continual basis, transporting inmates to court, medical, work and related facilities as appropriate, preparing reports, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Corrections Corporal and Sergeant.

Essential Functions

Ensures the safety and security of inmates inside and outside the corrections facility; controls inmates by performing routine facility or work area security and contraband checks and conducting head counts.

Receives and processes inmates into custody of the facility; searches prisoners; takes charge of personal property.

Verifies release orders and responds to inquiries pertaining to inmate status.

Escorts and transports inmates to court and other required appointments; escorts delivery, repair, supplier and vendor personnel as appropriate.

Supervises inmates during meals, recreation, religious services, school groups and visitation; verifies visitor identification and performs visitor searches. 

Administers drug screening, resolves conflicts, and removes dangerous and unruly inmates as necessary.

Answers telephone, directs and monitors phone calls as necessary; monitors and responds to radio traffic.

Enters accurate information into the computer system and updates records and files as necessary.

Prepares reports and maintains files and records.

Supervises special monitoring equipment and insures compliance with proper operation of equipment and devices.

Encourages and promotes a culture of excellent service.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Some knowledge of the security, rules, regulations, and procedures of the institution; some knowledge of the practices of modern penology as related to the supervision and care of persons under institutionalized restraint; ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly; ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates; ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems; ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately; ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates; ability to prepare records and reports; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, inmates, attorneys, and the general public.

 

Education and Experience

High school diploma or GED, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing and using hands to finger, handle or feel, frequently requires reaching with hands and arms and repetitive motions and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, tasting or smelling, pushing or pulling and lifting; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 

Special Requirements

Prerequisite for this position is successful completion of a basic skills test that meets the standard for Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification.  If selected for consideration you will be provided information on the skills test.

Obtain Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification, within six months.

Obtain certification for Georgia Crime Information Center (GCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) security and integrity training within six months.

Favorable background history as determined by review of local, State and Federal records.

Valid driver’s license in the State of Georgia with a favorable driving history (MVR).
