What are the responsibilities and job description for the Noxious Weeds Specialist position at Cowlitz County?
The Noxious Weed Specialist, a 9-month position, is responsible for conducting noxious weed surveys and control in a variety of project areas. The Specialist will work either alone or in a team to identify and treat noxious weeds, handle and apply herbicides, collect data, and document treatments. The Specialist will also participate in workshops and training courses, following the rules and regulations set by the Cowlitz County Noxious Weed Control Board and the Cowlitz County Policy, and work with partner organizations as well as landowners.

The I-5 corridor runs right through Cowlitz County providing quick access to the Vancouver, Washington and Portland, Oregon metropolitan areas.- Carry out noxious weed treatment projects using various approved methods, including manual removal and herbicide application.
- Lead a small team of seasonal technicians through project work in the Summer.
- Conduct inspections and surveys for noxious weeds within the project boundaries as assigned.
- Keep accurate records of all property visits and survey data.
- Walk, hike, and work in various physically challenging and potentially hazardous terrains and weather.
- Manages routine activities and ensures timely completion of work.
- May assist with planning projects and writing final reports.
- Attends continuing education classes, workshops, and training.
- Compliance with program rules and county policies.
- Able to occasionally adjust work hours to evenings and weekends if necessary due to the nature of the work and the program’s needs.
- Assists other personnel on a variety of project activities and other duties as appropriate.
- Maintains workplace and vehicles in a clean and organized manner.
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Possess and maintain a valid Drivers License and safe driving record.
- Must have experience working with noxious weeds or invasive plant species; or knowledge of plant life cycles or integrated pest management strategies.
- Comfortable working with herbicides: reading labels, properly mixing, and applying herbicides.
- Possess, or obtain within 60 days from initial employment, a Washington State Pesticide Public Operators License and the necessary endorsements on the licenses as required by law.
- Proficient with Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel (PowerPoint and Publisher desirable.)
- Ability to facilitate conflict resolution in a respectful manner.
- Ability to lead a small team in carrying out project work as prescribed by the coordinator.
- Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision and make sound judgments.
- Must be a self-starter with good organizational skills.
- Ability to communicate ideas clearly and establish professional relationships with partner agencies and the public.
- The ability to handle job stress and interact effectively with others in the workplace and the public.
Desired Skills and Abilities:
- Working knowledge of noxious weed identification and control methods.
- Working knowledge of Washington State Noxious Weed Law.
- Ability to work with GPS units and ArcGIS.
- Familiarity navigating Cowlitz County areas.
