What is an Electrical Engineer?

An Electrical Engineer performs and oversees the design, testing, implementation, and troubleshooting of electric power distribution and protection systems. The digital power metering and protection relays the Electrical Engineers support, monitor the status of the power system and running motors.  They use that information to interrupt power, or to alert someone to act, depending on the severity of the situation. Electrical Engineers work as part of a project team to design changes to electrical wiring and make improvements to the power distribution system based on the needs of various groups throughout the business (Operations, Engineering, Compliance, Safety, Measurement, Cybersecurity, and more). These improvements can increase reliability, allow for easier operation of the pipeline, increase response time to abnormal conditions, and increase safety of certain processes/pieces of equipment. Electrical Engineers generate documents throughout the project using standard templates for future reference and adherence to company standards and National Electric Codes. Electrical Engineers also perform critical testing and project commissioning support associated with a large pipeline system with 24/7/365 operations.

What an Electrical Engineering Co-Op might learn and do:

  • Become familiar with pipeline systems, including layout, components, and operational procedures.
  • Work with an Electrical Engineering mentor on how to use industry-standard software tools used for electric power distribution and protection systems.
  • Shadow experienced engineers to observe real-world operations and problem-solving techniques.
  • Learn how to interpret and review one-line power drawings, electrical schematics/wiring diagrams, loop drawings, and P&IDs.
  • Participate in a site walkdown at a pipeline facility to gather initial project info for electrical power changes.
  • Perform basic troubleshooting exercises on simulated motor protection scenarios under supervision.
  • Assist in executing a small-scale power system project/change/enhancement under the guidance of a mentor.
  • Gain hands-on experience with power system design, arc flash hazard analysis, relay coordination studies and motor protection programming.
  • Build a replica of a production motor protection system in a lab environment to test changes by simulating real-world operations.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to analyze existing power systems issues.
  • Conduct thorough testing to ensure the reliability and efficiency of the developed system.
  • Become familiar with electrical design documentation practices, including design specifications, implementation details, and testing results.
  • Participate in a project commissioning at a pipeline facility to implement the planned power system changes under the guidance of a mentor.
  • Finalize and present an end-of-term summary to supervisors and stakeholders.
  • Receive and give feedback to/from mentors and supervisors on co-op experience and areas for improvement.
