What are the responsibilities and job description for the Operations Conductor position at CPKC?
The Conductor role is a vital position in the railway industry, operating within the framework of the union agreement. This requires vigilance about safety, unscheduled shift work, and extended periods away from home, with working conditions varying in all types of weather.
- Assist in switching rail cars, making or splitting up trains in rail yards, or moving rail cars between rail yards.
- Coordinate the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling device.
- Signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using specific signals, or radio to indicate when to start, stop, back-up, set or release air brakes.
- Move on and off moving or stationary equipment.
- Handle emergency situations and operate fire extinguishers as well as be able to apply first aid techniques.

CPKC provides 16 weeks of paid in-class and field training, offering a solid understanding of our safety practices, rules, and operations. The training includes 42 dollars per day in classroom instruction and 41.06 dollars per hour in on-the-job training.
- Must be at least 18 years old.
- Valid United States passport, Passcard, or Enhanced Driver's allowing entry/re-entry to Canada.
This role also requires working unscheduled shifts in a 24/7 operating environment, up to 12-hour shifts, and being willing to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions for long periods of time.
