Serving as a member of the Community team, this role works with a variety of community clients to carry out a range of planning and zoning-related tasks.
THE SENIOR PLANNER AT CPL
Dedicated to improving, shaping, and enhancing neighborhoods, the Sr. Planner is a senior member of the team who plays a crucial role in the development of short and long-range planning projects across CPL’s diverse practice areas. Reporting to a Project Manager or Principal, you work with the Project Manager to understand and implement budgets, scopes, and schedules, coordinate the project scope by developing deliverable content and planning and managing project activities with the client and rest of the team.
You apply strong communicative abilities and industry understanding toward ensuring local communities have all the tools and resources needed to thrive, appreciating the positive, lasting impacts that long-range projects can have on a community. In this position, you will contribute moderate to large size, complex projects.

What You Bring To The Table
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Urban Planning , Urban Design, City Planning, Geography, Public Administration, Public Health, Architecture, Engineering, or related field and a minimum of four ( 4 ) years of planning experience in the public or private planning sector is required .
- Membership in the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is required .
- A thorough understanding of municipal planning issues, principles, methods and techniques.
- Successful implementation of policies and programs using established resources and working within budgetary constraints.
- Ability to read, understand and interpret a variety of written documentation and graphic material, conducting research as necessary.
- Robust interpersonal skills, communicating effectively both verbally and via written correspondence – and dealing courteously with elected officials, clients, and the general public .
- A background in graphic and/or urban design is a major plus.
- Serves as a senior planner for professional planning projects, research, and analysis .
- Provides customer service for planning and zoning matters, both in-person and over the phone .
- Writes staff memos for zoning-related applications for city boards and councils .
- Conducts research on planning and zoning-related matters .
- Completes zoning plan reviews for commercial building permits, land disturbance permits, plats and other land development/zoning related applications .
- Presents cases to city authorities and commissions .
- Read s , interpret s , and write s zoning and other codes.
- Contributes to internal master planning charrettes .
- Drafts reports for comprehensive and other master plans .
- Organizes and attends public input meetings for master planning and other zoning-related projects .
- Attends daytime, nighttime, and occasional weekend public meetings, assisting other planning staff as appropriate .
- Travels to other local offices and clients may be necessary .
