TheSonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART) Districtis seeking an Assistant General Counsel. This position represents the District in complex legal matters and serves as legal counsel in various areas including contract, tort, labor and employment, construction, real estate, and administrative law. The successful candidate will prepare and oversee legal documents such as contracts, briefs, and pleadings; provide expert legal advice to departmental staff; and engage in the research and analysis of laws, regulations, court decisions, and pending legislation. Additionally, the role provides comprehensive support to the General Counsel and involves significant decision-making.Reporting directly to the General Counsel, this position also may include supervisory duties, managing both professional and administrative support staff within the department. This advanced, professional role is tasked with organizing and managing the District’s legal activities, requiring a high degree of independence, initiative, and discretion.Key responsibilities include performing complex litigation in state and federal court from case assignment through trial and appellate hearings, advising the District’s Board of Directors and staff on various legal issues, staying updated on legal developments that affect the District, and acting as the District’s representative in external meetings. The incumbent will also stand in for the General Counsel during absences.
