This position is with the Eaton Police Department.
Nestled in the heart of Eaton, the Eaton Police Department is a 24-hour operation with officers on duty around the clock to assist citizens and is proud to serve the community of Eaton, Colorado. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:
The School Resource Offer (SRO) position performs general law enforcement work to protect the lives, safety, health, welfare and property of school administrators, security staff, students at the Eaton School District elementary, middle and high schools by enforcing municipal ordinances, state statues, and laws. Exercises independent judgment in dealing with dangerous or unusual situations and often works under stressful, high-risk conditions. The SRO serves as the primary link between the department and the school.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

- Work in support of the educational mission of the School District and in close partnership with the school administration to enhance safety on school grounds in order to provide a healthy and productive learning environment.
- Provide a visible and consistent police presence at the assigned schools as appropriate.
- Work to develop a rapport with students, particularly during unstructured times (e.g., lunch) and a working relationship with student organizations, faculty, staff members, School District administrators, and community members.
- Exercise discretion so that law enforcement engagement is fair and equitable for all students in the School District. Respect youth and families of all backgrounds and cultures. Utilize de-escalation strategies.
- Act as a designee of the school administration staff in maintaining the assigned school(s) as a safe environment. This includes buildings, grounds, parking lots, lockers, and other School District property.
- Assist in the prevention and control of crime, delinquency, truancy, and disruption at the schools, and collaborate and share information with School District staff regarding the Services as appropriate.
- Assist School District staff in developing plans, procedures, and strategies to prevent or minimize dangerous situations that can occur on campus.
- Provide or assist with presentations, guidance, and available educational resources in areas that may include but are not limited to conflict resolution, violence/delinquency prevention, alcohol and substance abuse, law related education, criminal justice system orientation, traffic and pedestrian education, and social media and internet safety.
- Adhere to the Colorado Revised Statutes and the Department's policies and procedures including, but not limited to crisis prevention, emergency response procedures (practice drills), threat assessments, and addressing behavior or other information that may indicate impending violence.
- Report all crimes originating on campus and provide information to the relevant principal on all cases that are worked off-campus by the Department or other agencies involving School District students.
- Participate in threat assessment process in accordance with School District policies and procedures.
- Enforce applicable laws and conduct or assist in the investigation of offenses on campus and offenses off campus but within the Town of Eaton that have a clear and specific connection to a school and student and staff safety. This will include, but is not limited to:
- Enforcement of state statutes and municipal ordinances, as appropriate;
- Writing reports, handling evidence, issuing summonses, and making arrests;
- Interviewing witnesses, suspects, and victims of criminal violations;
- Appearing in court and other judicial processes as required; and
- Assisting school administration in the coordination of other law enforcement entities having business on campus.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION: The SRO position has no direct reports. This position reports to the Sergeant or Corporal and is under the general supervision of the Chief of Police.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITY AND SKILLS:

- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Colorado P.O.S.T. certification required.
- Postsecondary education preferred.
- 3 years of previous patrol or SRO experience preferred.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must successfully pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug screen.
- Must successfully complete the Eaton Police Department hiring process and Patrol Field Training Program with an additional school-based phase.
- Must be willing to serve as an SRO for a minimum of 2 years.
HOURS OF WORK:·
This position is full-time and scheduled for 40 hours per week.
Primarily work Monday through Friday, dayshift, with occasional evening and weekend shifts for extracurricular activities and games.
When school is not in session, the SROs could be assigned to other shifts which could include nights and weekends.
