About the Position :
We are seeking a Materials Scientist to join our Product Development team in this on-site position in Norton, MA. In this role you will primarily be responsible for supporting research and development (R&D) efforts from conception through product introduction. The Materials Scientist will be expected to both contribute to current programs and be motivated to independently pursue additional opportunities to grow the CPS product portfolio. R&D efforts include current CPS product lines and next generation systems across the aerospace, defense, and energy sectors. These efforts may be funded either internally or from external sources, such as federal SBIR contracts.
Responsibilities :
Reporting to the Vice President of Technology, the Materials Scientist / Engineer will primarily be responsible for :
Carrying out hands-on R&D efforts including :
o Material design and fabrication
o Metallographic sample preparation
o Characterization (LOM / SEM / XRD / XRF)
o Coordinating testing conducted at external labs (mechanical, thermal, etc.)
R&D / product conceptualization including :
o Independent and collaborative proposal development and writing
o Develop and execute test plans
o Document and communicate evaluation results through technical reports and presentations
Assisting Business Development, Manufacturing, and Quality departments :
o Interact with customers to better understand requirements of current and future CPS products.
o Collaboratively apply knowledge of advanced materials and manufacturing techniques with the Business Development team to identify new product opportunities
o Process evaluation / optimization for implementation of continuous improvements
o Conducting hands-on failure analysis
Minimum Qualifications :
Degree in Materials Science & Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a similar discipline is required.
o BS with 10 years experience
o MS with 4-10 years experience
o PHD with 2-4 years experience
Demonstrated R&D experience including a track record of authoring and winning proposals
Strong writing skills
Metallographic sample preparation proficiency
Materials characterization techniques such as SEM / EDS, light microscopy, mechanical testing, etc.
U.S. citizenship required.
Preferred Qualifications :
Broad background in Materials Science / Metallurgy / Composites Engineering and experience with traditional industrial metallurgical processes and procedures (metal casting, heat treating, coating, brazing / sealing)
Knowledge of material behavior in extreme environments, with experience in one of the following applied areas; radiation shielding materials, refractory alloy processing, high temperature materials
Knowledge of additive manufacturing techniques and applications (laser powder bed fusion, binder jetting, and others) for both metals and ceramics
Familiar with powder metallurgy and ceramic processing techniques
Knowledge of oxidation and corrosion mechanisms and mitigations
PhD in Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering
Able to obtain DoD Security Clearance
