Job Duties 

The primary duties of an Entry Level Civil or Geotechnical Engineer/Geologist will be to assist Project Managers (Engineers and Geologists) with the completion of a wide range of geotechnical or environmental projects (possibly including structural or general civil engineering as well), including fieldwork (marking boring locations, logging soil borings, monitoring field or construction activities, coordination of field and laboratory testing activities and assisting with report preparation). Duties may also include (but are not limited to) miscellaneous field activities such as maintenance of traffic during road borings and manual digging, using Excel spreadsheets for various calculations, creating or editing Word documents for marketing or reports, and many other miscellaneous tasks as needed. A B.S. degree is required, but no experience is required (will train). Strong technical skills are critical to the success of these projects, which involves data acquisition, processing, evaluation, and reporting including the use of AutoCAD. Willingness to learn and be flexible with a wide variety of tasks are also very important. Typical job activities include the following: 

  • Completion of geotechnical engineering or environmental investigations, including completing or assisting with site evaluations, review soil samples assignment of laboratory testing, historical data review, foundation analysis, computation of stress/strain analyses for evaluation of bearing capacity and settlement of foundations, pile capacity analyses, retaining wall design, roadway soil surveys, computer modeling of slope stability, etc., and report preparation. 
  • Fieldwork as needed. 
  • Coordinate drilling operations and obtain utility clearances. 
  • Work with sub consultants as needed. 
  • Perform field and/or laboratory tests on soils to determine engineering or geological properties. 
  • Monitor subsurface drilling operations, classify soil samples, and write up detailed boring logs. 
  • Using the web, acquire project site and topographic maps and create report exhibits. 
  • Provide basic computer drafting support using AutoCAD. 
  • Compile project information and prepare draft reports for review by your Project Manager. 
  • Site inspections for various geotechnical or other issues on construction projects. 
  • Coordination with clients or their representatives and project owners/agencies. 
  • Assist with proposal preparation and marketing activities. 
  • Perform other duties as required – opportunities abound for a wide variety of assignments. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

Engineers and geologists must possess a 4-year engineering/geology degree; EI/EIT certification is desirable (required for Staff Level Engineer). Excellent communication skills are requisite, including the ability to write technical reports. No job experience is required (we will train), a positive attitude, willingness to take direction and learn a variety of new tasks, promptness, efficiency, and organizational skills are essential (you will be working on multiple projects simultaneously), willingness to work on a wide variety of projects that may change daily. Engineers must be proficient with MS Office applications including spreadsheets and word processing; knowledge of CAD and/or GIS applications is beneficial. 

Physical Working Conditions 

This job requires both field and office time. A clean driving record (for insurance purposes and driving company vehicles) is advantageous. We have a team-oriented approach, so the ability to work with and for others is also imperative.  After onboarding and training is complete to the satisfaction of the hiring manager, the job may be performed in a hybrid function. The employee: 

  • Must be able to work indoors and outdoors in hot and/or cold weather conditions. 
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time. 
  • Must be able to perform hand auger borings. 
  • Must be able to kneel, squat or bend. 
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds.
