Craftsbury Outdoor Center | June – August 2025
The Women’s Biathlon Coaching Apprenticeship at Craftsbury Outdoor Center (COC) is an immersive opportunity for women looking to advance their skills as biathlon coaches. This apprenticeship provides hands-on coaching experience under the mentorship of Craftsbury Biathlon Club and Green Racing Project (GRP) coaches while working with a range of athletes, from youth and masters to elite-level competitors.
The position is expected to run from approximately June 15 - August 31, with some flexibility on start and end dates. Expected time commitment would be 20 hours/week. Apprentices will help with camp weeks and races, and those weeks involve higher hours. This apprenticeship will receive meals and a stipend or hourly rate (number of meals and compensation dependent on time commitment), optional housing (though lodging accommodations may be rustic), as well as access to trails, the gym, and other facilities. This position is not a training opportunity for those currently pursuing their own ski racing. It is an excellent opportunity for current or aspiring coaches to develop their skills and knowledge.
Summer job responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Working with COC coaching staff to provide range support during biathlon training sessions for the Green Racing Project and Craftsbury Ski Club athletes
- Helping develop shooting practice plans for any given group
- Assisting in managing and maintaining the range and equipment
- Coaching at and helping to organize club biathlon camps and race events
Requirements include the following:
- Outstanding communication skills
- Ability to work with varied age groups and abilities
- Certification in (or willingness to obtain certification in) CPR/First Aid, SafeSport
- US Biathlon membership (Coach) and willingness to obtain their Basic Rifle Safety Certification and Range Safety Officer Certification
- Willingness to perform other tasks as needed
The ideal candidate:
- Is highly knowledgeable and passionate about skiing or biathlon
- Is interested in coaching long-term
- Loves working with athletes of various ages and has lots of energy and enthusiasm
- Is organized and can maintain order in chaotic settings
- Can adapt on the fly to adjust for inclement weather and other unexpected obstacles
- Will be available from June 15 – August 31. However, if qualified candidates’ schedules do not allow that long of an apprenticeship, we’re open to splitting the time between 2 candidates, with a minimum of a month from any one candidate.
