POSITION SUMMARY
The VP of Nursing Service / Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) provides strategic leadership as the senior Nursing position responsible for all nursing, diagnostic and other designated patient care functions and services within the hospital organization. The role assumes responsibility for assessing, planning, coordinating, implementing and evaluating nursing and laboratory practices at a facility level.
This position is responsible for planning, organizing and directing the overall operations of the Nursing Department, as well as lab and diagnostic services. The CNO will ensure required compliance with all state, federal, and local regulations, laws, standards, and protocols. This position will also ensure the department's ongoing readiness for joint commission, state and CMS visits.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Licensure / Certification / Registrations : Current Colorado RN license, Basic Life Support certification, Nursing Administration certification required within 24 months of hire
Education : RN, BSN minimum nursing degree required. A Masters in Nursing or relevant degree required from an accredited college or university, CCNE or NLNAC accredited school is strongly preferred.
Experience : Minimum of 5 years progressive Nursing Leadership experience in an acute care / neuroscience setting. Strong experience in financial analysis and personnel matters is required.
Skills & Abilities : Excellent organization and customer service skills. The ability to successfully handle multiple priorities and prioritize and schedule accordingly. Must be able to successfully and effectively communicate with a variety of personnel. Behaviors demonstrate a caring and supportive leadership style. Successful experience with team-building, conflict resolution, and communication skills, both verbal and written, are required. The ability to delegate and / or interpret work expectations for a group of workers, assigning and monitoring specific duties to them, maintaining harmonious relations among them and promoting efficiency. Work collaboratively with other departments and physicians. Able to respond to crises and emergency situations appropriately. The ability to develop institutional educational and research policies and programs, quality improvement programs, and operational policies and procedures. The ability to use professional judgment to identify areas for improvement and participate in the development of quality initiatives. The ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the position. Proven analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills. The ability to make formal presentations in front of large groups. Creative and able to be an "out of the box" thinker. Strong computer skills including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office, Excel and PowerPoint. Epic experience preferred. Demonstrates monitoring and follow-through with job responsibilities. Open to feedback and self-initiated professional, leadership growth.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Organize, direct, and administer all nursing services in order to provide the level of care required by current medical and nursing standards, utilizing evidence-informed guidelines.
Ensure nursing staff practices according to the ANA Code of Ethics and within their scope of practice according to the Colorado Nurse Practice Act.
Assume an active role with the hospital’s Executive leadership, medical staff, Department Directors, and other clinical leaders in the hospital’s decision-making structure and process.
Oversee assigned department operations.
Ensure compliance of regulatory requirements by all assigned personnel within the department of oversight. Maintain Magnet Designation status.
Support and develop departmental staff.
Responsible for the selection and development of leaders within the areas of responsibility. Encourage and facilitate the professional advancement of employees by affording opportunities for further education and experience. Develop leadership growth plans for all leaders that directly report to the CNO.
Round on patients, families, employees, and physicians to enrich communication, ensure alignment, oversee operations, and ensure that the experience is positive.
Establish mechanisms to assure nurses throughout the organization are involved in shared–governance and decision-making structures that establish standards of practice and address issues of concern.
Oversee and review the annual budget. Responsible for cost controls to ensure maximum effectiveness of funds expended on the approved departmental budgets.
Collaborate with other disciplines for the implementation of programs, policies, and procedures that address how patient care needs of the patient population served are assessed, met, and evaluated.
Maintain oversight on continuing quality assessment and improvement departmental activities and communicates with the Administration team on the activities / issues of the Nursing Department.
Recommend, support, and participate in education services, including orientation of new employees or department staff meetings.
Ensure that cordial relationships are maintained with patients and families. Ensure leadership rounding is occurring by all assigned leaders.
Take the leadership role in hospital accreditation and licensing activities related to the department.
Responsible for the oversight of the Craig Lab and the contracted diagnostic services under the day to day management of the ACNO.
Assure Nursing Leadership support for staff by maintaining a visible presence.
