The Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, founded in 2006, has become nationally recognized for its innovative programs. The only public graduate journalism school in the northeastern U.S., it prepares students from diverse economic, racial, and cultural backgrounds to produce high-quality journalism.


As the profession continues to reinvent itself for the digital age, the Newmark J-School is at the forefront of equipping the next generation of journalists with the reporting, writing, visual, audio, data, technological, and entrepreneurial skills they need to find stories and tell them effectively. The school offers a Master of Arts in Journalism, a unique bilingual M.A. in Journalism for students fluent in English and Spanish, and the nation's first M.A. in Engagement Journalism.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, the Director for Academic Operations will provide operational and administrative support to the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Partners with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in planning and delivering high priority and impactful projects and prepares high level correspondence.
  • Orchestrates and executes all faculty personnel actions, such as appointments, reappointments, promotions, tenure, distinguished professor nominations, proposals for salary- above-base, fellowship leaves of absence, special leaves of absence.
  • Ensures timely and proper implementation of all relevant HR policies and procedures at the SOJ and ensures that all deadlines are met.
  • Provides tactical guidance in the planning, execution, and management of academic initiatives.
  • Collaborates with the academic and administrative offices on sensitive and high-level projects that further the mission of the institution.
  • Reviews workflows and policies and procedures pertaining to Academic Affairs and revise/streamline as needed to yield greater efficiencies and quality outputs; train personnel on operational and service processes and protocols; maintain relevant documentation.
  • Orchestrates and executes appointments and reappointments for all college assistants, teaching and non-teaching adjuncts, continuing education instructors and January Academy instructors on behalf of the Associate Dean.
  • Oversees and manages the lifecycle of the non-teaching adjunct annual and summer appointments; liaises with Human Resources regarding the appointment process and Payroll to confirm paychecks.
  • Manages the budget for all temporary staff for under Academic Affairs in coordination with the finance office; conducts compensation cost analysis and projection; Recommends changes/actions for efficient budgeting and cost savings
  • Manages performance evaluation process for faculty and staff to ensure evaluations are submitted and compliant with applicable CBAs, and CUNY s rules/regulations
  • Manages the Multiple Position reporting process for full-time faculty, provides guidance as needed; partners with the Office of Human Resources to ensure compliance.
  • In collaboration with Human Resources, provides guidance to the campus departmental staff on instructional and non-instructional and faculty workload processes and procedures.
  • Liaisons with departments (e.g., Human Resources, Finance, and academic departments, etc.) to maintain an updated record of hiring processes and procedures; and requests appointments with HR.
  • Acts a liaison between faculty, staff and Human Resources and Payroll to ensure accurate and timeliness of information. Resolves any discrepancies as problems may arise.
  • Serves as a liaison with the Graduate Center's Human Resources for personnel actions for staff and faculty.
  • May represent the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs as a representative for the College.
  • Approves staff timesheets as a proxy approver.


Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work on-site in the office.


QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's Degree and eight years' relevant experience required.

A preferred candidate should have:

  • A minimum of eight (8) years’ experience in higher education.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of faculty and adjunct appointments.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong administrative skills.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

$124,656 - $129,310. Salary commensurate with education and experience.
