Craig's Doors is seeking reliable, compassionate, and self-motivated individuals with a passion for human services to help staff our emergency shelter programs. Craig's Doors is a local human services provider that operates two emergency shelter programs in Amherst and Hadley, a community resource center, and a low threshold supportive housing program. We are currently hiring Direct Care staff for 1st (7AM-3PM) and 2nd (3PM-11PM) Shift at our non-congregate shelter site in Hadley. Part-time to start with potential for full-time with proven performance.
Responsibilities:
Direct Care Staff monitor the facility and guests to maintain a clean, safe and peaceful environment. This includes:
- Greeting all visitors to the program site and directing them accordingly
- Answering phone, conducting phone intakes of community members seeking placement, and directing messages to appropriate staff
- Monitoring and documenting program activities in the daily log
- Maintaining accurate daily records, including writing shift summaries, and at times, incident reports
- Cleaning and performing site maintenance tasks in accordance with CDC guidelines, including routine cleaning of common areas and high-touch surfaces
- Setting up meal service, making coffee, and re-stocking the snack table
- Providing orientation to new guests and completing intake paperwork
- Conducting regular perimeter checks of facility, inside and outside
- Collecting and disposing of trash as needed
- At the congregate program: completing walk throughs of congregate room at regular intervals to monitor guest well-being, and addressing any safety hazards observed
- At the non-congregate program: completing nightly room checks, conducting wellness checks of guests as needed, and completing perimeter checks at required intervals to monitor guest well-being, and addressing any safety hazards observed
- De-escalating guest conflicts
- Monitoring guest smoke breaks
- Daily inventory checks, making sure soap and hand sanitizer is regularly filled, that masks, clean blankets, and dining ware are available, and reporting any needs to Program Manager in a timely manner
- Attend routine staff meetings and provide feedback to supervisors
Qualifications:
- Able to receive and follow directions
- Demonstrates professionalism, empathy, and discernment in all situations
- Able to work with diverse populations and sensitive to guests' needs and challenges
- Able to problem solve on-the-spot while knowing when to bring in a supervisor
- Uses discretion in the handling of confidential information
- Collaborates with supervisors and fellow staff for the safety and success of the program
- Experience with de-escalation and conflict resolution
- Strong organizational and written skills, familiarity with navigating workplace software programs
- Strong verbal communication and time management skills
- Able to respond to health and safety emergencies and consult with supervisor when needed
- Communicates respectfully with Emergency Responders
- Able to work independently and as a team member
- Certification in First Aid/CPR/AED, bloodborne pathogens, and the use of Narcan. Trainings will be provided by Craig’s Doors if the candidate is not already certified.
The successful candidate will be able to ensure guest adherence to program rules, communicate them in a manner that respects the dignity of all guests, and re-direct guests as needed.
Daily attendance is imperative to maintaining a safe environment and operational continuity. Direct Care Staff must be dependable and either have reliable transportation or live within walking distance of the program site.
Direct Care Staff must report to scheduled shifts during snow emergencies. Failure to do so will be seen as an abandonment of employment.
Knowledge of community resources, a commitment to providing trauma-informed care and dismantling stigmas around homelessness are a plus.
Lived expertise is considered a strength at Craig's Doors.
